  • Talking yourself out of a good deal

So I just tried to save a customer money but he didn't want to know as he wanted a free device.

Basically, the last time this guy renewed his account he took some discount towards his tariff instead of getting a new phone upgrade. This is quite common if the customer is happy with their existing phone (I did the same thing last year). And because he took the discount, he can upgrade to another handset at any time but may receive less/no discount going forward.

The phone had failed but as he didn't want the latest top of the range Windows iPhone Galaxy Xperia Blackberry then he could have picked up this phone for about £20 instead. We're not meant to offer this but I tend to suggest it because it saves them cash and I don't work on commission. Buy a cheapo £20 phone and keep your tariff discount (he's saving £120 over two years).

Nope, he wants the free phone. Fair enough - well done mate, you just talked yourself out of saving £100.

Some people are so indoctrinated to the eeevil concept of upselling that they assume any conversation by a salesperson is that. I've stopped even trying when an SC makes it clear that they want to pay more...they really don't want a deal? Fine.
