  • "I don't like the picture on the cigarette packet!"

Not sucky, just a bit weird. This customer asked for some smokes. She paid, I pulled the shutter across and handed her a packet. She turned it over, shuddered, and said, "I don't want the picture of the yucky lungs. Get me another!"

We went thru several other pictures, before she finally settled on the one with the man on the slab. Apparently, as well as "yucky lungs", she also hates "yucky teeth", "dead babies", "horrible tashes" and "tadpoles."

Honestly, I have never had such a request before.

I get the "causes premature birth" ones. It's nice they cater to men.

Sarcasm dear, sarcasm. I’m well aware that dealing with civilians in any capacity will skin your faith in humanity alive, then pickle anything that remains so as to watch it shrivel up into an immortal husk thus reminding you of how dead inside you now are.

Oh god I used to get a couple of those types when I used to work convenience stores, none of us wanted to dig through to find something more appealing to them. If it bothers you that much it means part of your brain is trying to tell you something!

We don't have the pictures on our cigarette cartons here. We just have big warnings like "Pregnant? Breastfeeding? Your smoking can harm your baby". But I think it might happen soon.

You soon will get to dig thru packets looking for the least offensive picture!

By the way, for those not in the now, "horrible tash" refers to the picture of the guy with the throat tumour. It was funny in itself that the customer didn't remark on that, just on his 70s porno mustache.

Perhaps then, madam, you should quit smoking.

And tadpoles? I'm assuming this is possibly a picture of sperm with bent tails?

back working at Kmart when we did sell smokes, one SC told the duty manager she didn't like the photo, and wanted a different packet.

Duty manager, not giving a sh*t that night, said, "Well there's a reason you're not supposed to like the photo, so deal with it."

They could be made to put something on the packets that equate smokers to Al Qaeda, and people would still buy cigarettes.

I mean, higher insurance premiums haven't gotten people to quit. Nor have "no smoking" areas, and it appears these images haven't, either.

Want people to quit? Make cigarettes $1,000 a pack.

That is correct. However, I let her keep her innocence by not pointing that out.

They'd just take out loans, sell their cars and anything else they could spare, or steal the cigs. It's a serious addiction. My own mother would complain about being unable to buy something or pay a bill, but she ALWAYS, and I mean always, had money for cigs.

nicotine is as addictive as "hard" drugs like coke, heroin, and meth. driving up the price won't make people quit.

This. A lot of people at my work smoke. It's not something that appeals to me, the smell and possible health issues down the road. However, I can understand addiction, even if smoking isn't my particular downfall.

Wouldn't work. Criminal organizations are already running lots of "grow ops" for pot, they'd just add tobacco to their indoor plantations and undercut the price.

What I don't understand is why some sharp operator doesn't "sort" the packs, and send the "smoking during pregnancy will harm your baby" packs to someplace like a food truck that serves machine shops (virtually 100% male market), and the "smoking makes you impotent" packs to someplace with a high percentage of female customers.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

No need to further the nanny state.

Anyway, the man on the slab is my favourite pic too, simply cuz a ditzy friend of mine thought he was relaxing on a sunbed.

My mother likes to tell us that she had to quit when cigarettes got up to $0.25 a pack.
