Many years ago when I had WIC I would separate each check. I remember something like one check gave you milk and another check was for cereal and so on. And you could not go through the express line with WIC and I totally understood that. One day the front end person told me that express was open and I could go there. I told her that I have all WIC in my cart. She said that it was OK and I could go to express anyway. The cashier watches me separate my stuff and take the checks out and he yells at me "I CAN'T DO WIC HERE!" I said I am sorry but that lady said it was OK. He starts the transaction mumbling that he hates dealing with WIC. I left feeling like I was some sort of loser

nah, you weren't the loser here, this cashier was. Although maybe the guy's mouth to brain filter was just broken that day.

I had to deal with WIC a few times while I worked at Giant, but at the wholesale club now, we don't take WIC or food stamps or anything like that.

Fortunately, in the seven and a half years I've worked there, I've only been asked a handful of times if we take WIC or food stamps, and while they may be disappointed, they didn't raise a stink about it.

Hmm, someone mentioned here that WIC may be moving to a card system??? Oh I really hope so, it will make things much easier for everyone. Besides, just like with foodstamps, I like how cards are not glaringly obvious that the person is on welfare.

Aside from the general difficulty of processing WIC transactions, both customers and cashiers have to be very exact when choosing product. I'm often surprised at how many customers get things right, and I despair at the volumes of people who don't. Customers don't seem to pay attention to non-fat vs. full-fat milk, prepackaged vs. block cheese, etc. Some customers are just ignorant and I can forgive them for that, most argue and declare "Well, I did it laaaasssttt time!!"

Anyone who wants to argue the system or forgets to give me their checks or otherwise slows the transaction, I hate you a little. Those who separate the items and/or have their checks ready for me. I'm starting to love you.

What I loved was not only would people forget to mention WIC, we would wind up having to then void the *entire* order because they were buying Cocoa Puffs.

"Ma'am, this is a list of allowed cereals"

            "Ugh!! I hate this stuff!!"

"It's not for *you*, its for your *baby*...."

I just went to look at my home states WIC requirements, I meet most of them except I make too much. Now I don't have any human kids so it was mostly curiosity on my part but they seem to have really low levels for those who might be working two jobs to keep the roof over their heads.

I mean if they said "Okay your rent is this so your take home is this." I think a lot more people could use it and I wouldn't see so many tummy streched kids.
