I unfortunately found out the hard way that if there is no one physically sitting in my vehicle then it will lock itself after a couple of minutes of inactivity.

I FIGURED SOMETHING OUT.
Because I almost did it again this morning, and I figured out which wires aren't connecting in my head.
Usually when I go out to shop, I don't have a drink in the dash cupholder, and my handbag sits on the passenger seat next to me. When I get out, I nab the bag and lock the driver's side door after I've opened it so I don't forget to lock the car. When I go to field study, I have coffee in the cupholder and a schoolbag with my handbag in the passenger seat, so usually I just go around the other side of the car to grab them rather than risk spilling the coffee.
What must have happened was the red wire for my shopping habit and the black wire for my field study habit criss-crossed and I shorted something in my head, which resulted in locking my stuff in the car. Thankfully I had my keys in my pocket this time, but I smacked myself in the forehead and went "Ah. That's how."

I actually did that 3 times in a week, 3 days in a row. And I knew it every time, as I was shutting the car door. Here I was, shutting the door, and thinking, "Oh yeah, there are my keys, and I locked the door." But I wasn't about to slam my hand in the door just to get the keys."I'm not even supposed to BE here today!"

Man I have done this 4 times in the last couple of years.
Luckily the first two times I was working at an auto body repair shop and someone jimmied the door open so I could get my keys.
After that I made sure I had 2 sets of keys. My main set with my house, work and a car key and a spare set that has another car key as well as a spare set of hubby's car.
