  • I, is for internet

One thing that drives me a bit mad is when a guest hasn't even tried the internet, and call down asking how to connect. This is especially annoying since there are cards that tell them how in every room. Of course the SC dooesn't read.

Honestly. How did you get let out of your house?

Another thing that drives me batty is when a guest first pulls up a browser. Because they are logging onto our wireless system the first homepage that comes up is the hotel's home page. For some reason this causes great dismay & fear! For guests call down in a panic! "I logged on, but it displayed this strange page!" I have to gently inform them to just browse the internet as normal. They don't believe me! I ask them to try to change web pages. OMG is works!

I don't like the people I have to walk through how to connect. How do these people have computers??? If they are going to take it somewhere, I wish they would realize the Front Desk people are not required to have networking or computer programing degrees. They get annoyed with us when they can't seem to figure out their own damn computer.

    And yeah...just sick of it.

It doesn't bother me too much when they call down wanting to know how to connect as we have a network key that has to be entered. However, the network key is 10 digits. It never fails, they call, I get maybe the first three numbers out then they cut me off and hang up. Or they didn't do it right and then argue with me that the internet isn't working. Don't tell me it is't working, I know it is. Oh, how do I know? Well, I know because my desktop at home is run off the same network. If their nice about it, I'll let them bring their laptop to the lobby and I'll help them connect it. If not, well, they really didn't need internet anyway.

Yeah doesn't work like that in my hotel. If they have issues with the internet, even if it's their own problem, they have every right to get their money back.

We turn off our code system usually, so it's one less thing BUT STILL!

I had a conversation the other day that hurt my brain.

Guest calls down and asks how to connect, and every time that happens, I am ready for my brain to hurt, because, come on, it is not that hard. So he says that he plugged in and it won't work.

I ask him if he has a wireless card, he said yes, so I asked if the wireless was working.

He said ""So, I don't have to plug anything in to use the wireless?"

I've had that happen more often than not too. And people trying to use their cell phones to get on. At least most of them understand somewhat when they can't use the internet.

Our network is even easier... turn on your computer... assuming you have Mac OS 10 or Windows XP/Vista it will automatically find the strongest available network... it may or may not give you a pop-up saying "no trusted network available, do you want to connect to (our network)" you click yes and you're connected... if no pop-up comes up you are connected... no passwords, no home page with rules and hotel promotions, just open your web browser once the computer has found our network and you're on... every single night I have to walk people through this oh so simple process.
