  • They're Toying with My Sanity

A user contacted me today to let me know that they couldn't activate. So they sent me the data from their computer. I looked it up and it exactly matched the data these same exact people sent me back in February. Repeatedly...

Any bets on the number of iterations before they get it this time?

Did they get it the first time?

Or is this still the same computer as in February?

If you have to ask, it's probably better posted at www.fratching.com

      It's probably a new computer.

To make this easier to follow, here's a summary of what's happened so far:

Late last year a dealer activated a computer and then sold it (and the software) to this customer. For some reason he gave that customer the ref. code and activation code, even though they expired after they were used to activate that computer.

Then back in February the customer needed to activate again, but sent me the ref. code that the dealer gave them. I told them it wouldn't work and explained how to get a fresh ref. code (or activate over the internet which is faster and easier). They responded by re-sending the ref. code I had just told them wouldn't work. We went back and forth quite a few more times. Each time I would respond and tell them the old ref. code wouldn't work, they would keep sending it back and ask for an activation code.

Eventually the emails stopped, so I looked them up and found they had succeeded in activating over the internet without my intervention. I rejoiced.

Yesterday they asked for another activation code and sent me long-expired ref. code that the dealer gave them. The very same one I told them repeatedly back in February was expired and wouldn't work.

I have to admire the dogged persistence with which they have retained that completely useless string of numbers. If the would apply the same amount of effort to reading and following instructions, can you imagine what they could accomplish?
