My uncharitable thought for how she got that far? She bought papers, but lost her supplier this year. Or, she made it through her previous writing assignments on her knees.

Not that I can detect any actual editing going on in newspapers these days. Some of the mistakes I see make me cry. I've often thought of taking articles every now and then, marking the boo-boos with red and sending it to the paper.
A lot of publications these days (2) seem to be spellchecking articles instead of proofreading them. If a wrong word is actually a legitimate word, or someone accepts the first option from the spellchecker when it flags a misspelling and doesn't check the context, you get garbage.

        1) "The Decadent", President's Choice, Loblaws family of companies, 2008

        2) Northwestern University NewsCenter October 2008. Carefully read paragraph 14 to see what metals were added to the lead telluride. Second copy of article at Spacemart in case original is corrected.
