I'm into etymology, so for me I'd have a great answer, but really...who asks that?

Well, come to think of it...I've asked it a couple of times. Usually when it's an unusual name.

Actually, so have I if it's a name I've never heard of. Usually the answer I get is that their name came down through someone in their family.

We do have a Princess at work (come to think of it, I've met a woman named Queen as well.) And another woman I used to work with named her elder son Pharoah (which is also her father's name.)

          Cool names, all of 'em.

            A bit pretentious though, no?

Oh well, 'tis not mine to judge. My name means 'conquering crown' after all XD

                You're named Gioachino...or Rossini?

note: Gioachino Rossini was the composer of William Tell Overture

I am named what I am because my dad shouldn't be allowed access to statistics on trends of name useages. He looked for the least common name in the country at the time and that's what I got (I was nearly Zelda). My middle name is my great-grandmother's name which was something my grandmother wanted.
How was I supposed to know someone was slipping you Birth Control in the food I've been making for you lately?

It'd been awesome if I'd known a 'Zelda' growing up...oh the jokes I would make...

Are you sure you're not named after a famous magician?

I went to school with a Sultana.

Where her family come from that pretty much means Princess (female Sultan). However to me it's like being called currant or raisin.

I'm deeply offended that my mother can't remember why she named me.

Everyone always thinks we're named after the Queens because she's called Elizabeth. But she's named after the ship(the Queen Elizabeth, sister ship to the more famous Queen Mary, precursor to the more impressive QE II) because her father was working at the ship yard when it was fitted out. I do try and tell her never to go to Hong Kong in case she burns in the harbour there.

Being named after a ship seems pretty good to me. You're own mother forgetting why she named you - less cool. *sulks*

We are planning on two names with double literary connections.

If it's a boy, Conrad (my husband's favorite author is Joseph Conrad, I rather like the poet Conrad Aiken).

For a girl, Tamora (he likes an author named Tamora Pierce, I am a Shakespeare junkie and Tamora was the Goth queen in Titus Andronicus).

My dad chose my name because he liked it. My Mom didn't really care what I was called.
