  • Toying with their minds

These are some tidbits from a past job I had as a cashier at a convenience store/gas station. The job could be very tedious at times, and once in awhile I liked to play with my customers' minds a bit, just for amusement.

Do you have an ID for that?

My manager decided to tape a giant sign on the counter that said 'NO ID NO SALE' and looked like a 3 year old made it. Why, I have no idea...we already had about a dozen signs around the store that said the same thing. At the start of my shift, one of the regulars came in to get a gallon of milk. He brings it to the register and puts it on the counter, right on top of the newly-placed sign.

Me: "Do you have an ID?"
    Regular: "Huh?"
Me: "Do you have an ID for the milk?"
Regular: "I need an ID for milk?"
Me: -moves the milk over so he can read the sign- "The sign says NO ID NO SALE."
    Regular: "oh....."

And he showed me his ID.

    Se Habla Espanol?

This took place with another regular, who would come in every week to purchase a prepaid calling card. We sold the kind where it was a blank card and we'd print the card up for whatever denomination they wanted it in. One day, I decided to have a little fun...

Me: "Did you want that printed in English or Spanish?"
    Regular: "English...why do you ask?"
Me: "Well, because if you have it printed in Spanish, it's about 50 cents cheaper."
Regular: "Really? How can that be?"
Me: "I don't know, something to do with the conversion rate from pesos to dollars."
Regular:" "oh...well in that case, I'll take it in Spanish!"

From then on, every week he came in, he asked for it to be printed in Spanish.....and never even realized that he was paying the exact same amount that he was paying before.

    hehehehe.....

I'm thinking it was just to screw with the customer's mind -- it really wasn't needed.

You don't. That's kind of the point of the story. It wouldn't be funny if it was something you did need ID for.
