  • I can be so silly sometimes

On the bright side, I have $30 more in my bank account which is a tremendous help at this moment.

On 3/9, I bought a book at books a million which I paid for with a check. I check my account online like every other day and saw that this check cleared three days or so later. Cool.

On 3/11, I bought another book at the same store, same location and I also paid for this book with a check. I normally don't use checks, I use my debit card, however, my card is slightly damaged and some places, like books a million, card readers cannot read my card. I checked my account like I always do and that check had not cleared. I kept checking it, like I always do...never seen the check clear...

Finally, today, I call Books a million and ask about this and the manager asked me the genius question, "Have you called your bank?" I asked, "No, I don't think I need to because I check my account online and I haven't seen it. Why would my bank hold a check?"

So, she said she'd check their records and get back to me.

In the meantime, I decided that maybe I should call my bank. Well...you probably know where this is going...

I called and asked about the check and was told that it cleared on the same day i wrote it...because it was an electronic transmission...it cleared right away. So, with the guy on the phone with me, I got online and checked...and sure enough I missed it! Don't know how...but I did.

Now, I also dont' understand how I have the $30 extra dollars except that maybe I spent some money thinking it hadn't cleared and wrote a negative balance in my account, then when I got paid, I added my paycheck minus the negative balance. So, now I have an extra $30...and I kind of need it for something for school.

I am still a bit confused about the mistake though...

My wife and I were once pleasantly surprised to find that we had $2000 more in our checking account than we thought. It was marvelous. $30 is a great discovery as well. This to me is a good example of why you should frequently keep up with your banking.

When I was still using pen, paper and a calculator I'd always get confused and make mistakes. Now I have the option to view my bank account, and transaction history online which makes things much easier. I still get confused about my balance sometimes, then I go check it with the calculator and if that doesn't work I make the boy come in and look it over and explain to me.

So's finding extra money in your account from the Govt, when you weren't expecting.

At first you go, uh-oh, someone must have stuffed up. But you check with the Govt department, you know, before you spend it and they go "Where's our money?" Well someone did make a mistake, but it was in my bf's favour.

We are both on govt. assistance while studying at Uni (and working our backsides off as well so we can pay bills ) and it turns out that for two years they had been giving him the wrong amount. They recalculate for some reason and dump the outstanding money in his account without a letter or anything letting him know this. I guess they should really check which account you want them to put it in, or send a check or something, not just put it into your nominated account for payday and expect you to know what is going on...
