  • Someone took her baby but she wants a phone, not a cop

The library has cops working here most of the time. The cop is stationed on the first floor.

I was at the main desk on the first floor, in front of the doors.

    woman w/o baby=wo
    =me
    cop=cop

wo: Can I use a phone?
me: sorry, we don't have a public phone.
    wo: someone took my baby.
me: oh. Do you want to talk to the cop? (me pointing at cop 5 feet from me)
wo: no, I need a phone. I left my baby with my fiance and when I came out I they weren't there.
me: well, let's get the cop.
me: (to cop) Hi, this woman says someone took her baby. Then she says it was her fiance.
cop: (concerned) someone took your baby? Where was this?
wo: here, in the library. I just need a phone. Someone took my baby.
cop: can you discribe your baby?
wo: I went into the bathroom and left my baby with my fiance and when I came out they were gone.
cop: your fiance has a phone?
    wo: yes.
    cop: what were they wearing?
wo: (to me) did you see anyone walking out with a baby?
me: Every 5 min. someone walks out with babies.
    Then the woman walks outside

Cop: (to me) if she doesn't trust her fiance, why she leave her baby with him?
Me: and if she left the baby with her fiance, why she said that someone took her baby?
cop: maybe they are still in the building. I could have looked for them if she gave me a discription.

We see the woman on the plaza, looking around. At some point she borrowed a cell phone from someone. Then she came back in.

Cop: did you find your fiance?
wo: No (now she's weepy), he doesn't answer the phone.
    cop: what were they wearing?
wo: I don't know what happened to them.

and more of her not answering the questions.

Anyway, she goes outside again. Then we see an older woman, a man pushing a baby carriage with a baby, and a toddler. She walks fast toward them. The woman opens her arms open for the toddler to jump in her arms. The group talk and she seems very happy.

So I guess she finds her family, but I don't consider a toddler a baby, esp. with a baby in the carriage. Is the baby not her baby but the older woman's? Or the fiance's baby?

This is a case where at first I didn't want her to use our phone because I can imagine her conversation: Hey, you have the baby? Ok. Well, what do you want to do? Go out?

In fairness I would imagine she was in panic mode in which the ability to think went right out the window.

But yeah lets not talk to someone who can make a call to organize a search and keep frantically searching on our own.

Yeah, I was thinking she wasn't thinking clearly, being that someone (oh no!) took her baby. OH wait, it was her fiance. She was pretty calm the first time she came up to me. And I am so use to people coming up to us asking to use the phone for an emergency, and it's not an emergency. Though latter on I wished I let her use the phone, poor woman. But the cop seemed like a better route at the time.

First time she mentioned her fiance took the baby, I was thinking she might have just broken up with him and he kidnapped her kid, but latter it sounded like he just didn't want to wait for her. Way to communicate with the woman you are going to marry. Can you just imagine their future together if every day she goes through something like this?

Well, to be honest, he may have taken them outside of the library because one or both kids were getting fussy and he didn't want them disturbing other people.

I feel bad for him - what kind of life is he going to have being married to someone who freaks out immediately when someone that is clearly an adult that she trusts moves from where she left them. No need to go straight to panic mode. What if they were just in the bathroom and she caused a police search over it?

Not that we have children, but if my g/f and I did have kids, I'm sure she would trust me to make intelligent decisions and not freak out if I took them out for a quick walk or something while she was busy in the library. Common sense, sadly, is not very common at all.
