  • "It's a silent number"

Minor background: for our PPU (Parcel pickup) and Home Delivery Services, we require a phone number for two reasons: one is confirmation that the order is going ahead, two is in the event of any forgotten bags, non-frozen items etc. we have their contact details. We also ask for a last name for our PPU services, but those on Home Delivery have a card with their details.

Anyway, onto the brain burp of the day.

I swear I wound up serving Sard Lady from one of my previous stories and she wanted a parcel pickup. No problem until we get up to the part where I ask for a phone number. The system will not let me skip the phone number, so I ask...

    "I don't give it out, it's a silent number."

    Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

My home number is a silent number and I still give it out in public to businesses. We wipe the numbers anyway once the day is done...so in the end I just put in a fake number, finished it up and sent her on her way, but made sure that whoever put away the order put the cold stuff away.

    Oh and a minor funny/oddity...

Putting through a customer's groceries, I come across some Vegie Burgers. Guess what the label said?

Interesting phrase for it "silent number."
I think we call them unlisted numbers here in the states.

For this lady though she seems to have the advanced plan: Voldemort number. The number which cannot be named!

Yeah, they're called silent numbers here in Australia. Because they're not in the telephone book and are blocked by Caller ID, they aren't given out easily hence "silent" number. From what I know, we're also blocked by telemarketers.

This lady I think took it to a new level. She does come in from time to time, and yells her questions at us. Not deliberately or angrily, but it's just funny. I think my thread The Good, The Bad and the Downright Weird has my first encounter with her.

You've only just heard about Not Burgers?? There's also Not Sausages and other Not Meats as well.. been around for years.... and years ... and I'll just stop now

Those 'silent number' types annoy me!!! It's not like we're going to plaster it all over a public toilet wall and scribble "For a good time, call ..." above it! (well, maybe we will, given the grief you're giving us about it all!!!)
When I said "From my research", what I actually meant to say was "Made shit up" - from a thottbot thread
