    I know we're getting kinda chatty about the flags and such... So the question seems to have passed by.

    I've seen flags upside down, or burned, in protest, but never backwards.

    So, uh... Honestly, if this woman cares so much about the US flag... Umm... I gotta ask... How come she's never seen it?

        So people who fly those flags are never in distress?
        That's because NM is beyond help....

        For one, the rest of the world sees our governor more than we do. (Although I am surprised that it was Clinton instead of him that went to North Korea.)

        The only problem I can see that Scotland has is the same one it's had for over 700 years.

          Today I saw a display of the flag that actually was incorrect. It was on one of our company's trucks delivering food!

          If the beginning and end of the truck is | | with the front part (where the driver and passenger sit) at *, and O is the blue canton and == are the stripes, the truck looked like this:

          | O== |*

          (this would have been correct if painted on the driver's side of the truck)

          However, the stripes must point in the direction of motion, which means it actually should have been painted on the truck like this:

          | ==O |*

            If it's any help, many Brits hang the Union Flag (it's only the Union Jack when flown on a ship) upside down inadvertently.

            http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch...unionjack.html

            You see how the red diagonal stripes aren't quite in the centre of the white diagonal stripes? If it's hung so the narrow white stripe is at the very top left, it's upside down. Confusing, yes? Of course, if you ask the average Brit that, they'd have no idea, so it's unlikely anyone outside of a protocol office or the Armed Forces would care!

            Seriously, I've never worked out why anyone gets so het up over it in everyday life. Perhaps in diplomatic circles where it could be seen as a deliberate insult, but by Joe Public?
            When I lived in the dorms (A while ago...), I had a Union Jack and a Brit pointed out that I had it upside down. I hung it the right way and said thanks.

              From a business standpoint, we might as well mount the flags the way prescribed by law, as this is the only way to display a flag that will not offend anyone.
              apparently not as the op shows.

                I didn't want to get too descriptive. I figured anyone who was interested in knowing more about the flag's construction would read through the site I posted the link to

                    Oh, I can sympathise. I've got a Greek nan on my mum's side & an Irish grandad on my dad's side, so I've tended towards those moods myself at times! Actually, can you imagine the combination of those flags? Particularly if you add the English?

                        Gah! Yes, it is hard not to seriously hurt myself after certain calls.

                        Worst calls from AL and TN, best calls seem to come from TX.

                        Being Canadian, they'd likely likely not listen to me. I've said it on Fratching, and I'll say it here. Some of the stuff Americans do just makes no sense to me, this being one of them.

                          Just this week, there was a story here in Canada about a couple being asked to take a Canadian flag down by the 'neighborhood association' because it was hung improperly. They hung it from a branch on a small shrub/tree/plant thing, and apparently that's frowned upon.

                          The reporter ran through the rules for hanging a flag in Canada... must be a proper flagpole (no trees or phone poles, I guess), vertical flags must have the top of the maple leaf to the left, bad taste to use a flag as a window covering, etc.

                          Guess the US isn't the only place where rules like these exist.

                            I think every country does. The flag of a nation is not just a pretty piece of cloth; it is the symbol of the nation and everything it stands for.

                            No, I'm not just being a jingoistic American; I would not even consider deliberately desecrating any other nation's flag, not even one I disagreed with.
                            I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

                              I'm the same way... both my boyfriend and I though gave my mother a decent tongue whipping over the fact that she didn't have her flag properly stored... now, I can handle people who don't fold the flag properly, because we do have a rather convoluted way of folding the flag (it must be triangular with ONLY the stars showing for those who aren't familiar)... but seriously, at least fold it some neat and tidy way rather than just throwing it in a heap.
                              So yeah, me Eagle Scout, boyfriend Military Brat... oh yeah... get us together around a poorly maintained flag and we will be having problems.

                                The Finnish flag is another one that's pretty hard to get wrong. It's symmetric along the long axis. Being a Nordic cross, the vertical bar goes closest to the flagpole, or on the left if hung on a wall. For vertical hanging, the bar goes nearer the top.

                                Finns have a broad tradition of flying the national flag on specific days of the year (and quite a lot of them at that), so people seem to get it mostly right.
