  • You know, you know, you know, rinse and repeat

I know some people have a habit of saying "you know" when chatting but come on, saying it 10 times aggravates the hell out of me! I am not dumb, I understand plain english, no need to keep saying you know after every sentence!

I had one old woman who kept saying after every sentence and i really wanted to hang up on her. She was being so annoying!

    Anyone else feel this way?

*raises hand* I do! I know exactly how you feel. Another one that bothers me is, "Right??" as a response after a statement. For example:

"Man, that girl is annoying." "Right??" With the "right" sort of exaggerated.

One of the girls at my old office said it ALL THE TIME and it drove me up a wall. After almost every comment... "Right??"

I hate people misusing the word 'like'. I may not always be the best at speaking but stop it. They use it as a pause in mid sentence, either finish your damn thought or shut the hell up.

        I hate:
"like" "um" "ah" "sooo" "ya know"
Any of them, really. Especially "like" out of context. My College English class back in my senior year of high school had a group of people with brains so insipid that instead of joining in with class "discussions," I sat there and tallied how many times I heard "like" out of context. I then handed it in to my teacher when he asked why I was so quiet in this class when I obviously loved talking in the last class I had with him.

He accepted it as my class participation grade since it at least meant I was paying attention

Of course, I had to write a small paper to go along with it, otherwise he was just handing me a grade. I wrote one about how I felt instant messengers and the abbreviations they've created are degrading the English language as a whole.

And then he had us give speeches with instructions saying a point would be deducted every time we used words like the ones above in our pauses. I miss that class.
I have CDO. It's kinda like OCD, but the letters are where they should be!

I had to go to computer training sessions back when I worked for the government. If the people giving the talks had skipped all the ums and ers, we would have finished those useless lectures in half the time.

I don't think this is exactly what's being discussed here, but it reminds me of this exchange with a guy who was completely pissed about some stuff that had happened, but understood that I couldn't help. Might not be verbatim.

C: So why does this happen?
            Me: Well...
C: I know, "um" is a very deep topic as well. *chuckles*

My local verbal pet peeves are 'innit' (technically an abbreviation of isn't it, & inserted at least once in every sentence) & 'literally', used repeatedly out of context.

I hate it when people, you know, speak like everything they say is a question? And then, like, almost always they are teenaged girls? But occasionally, they'll be fully grown women? And I just want to slap them, in the head? But I don't...because, well, uh, I try to be a good example to my children....

                  (Uptalking?)

(I absolutely loathe "know what i'm saying?"...because nine times out of ten, no, I don't have a freaking clue what you're saying)
you are = you're. not "your".

I'm guilty of this when I have insomnia, mostly because in my house if you stop speaking for a second to remember what you were gonna say, you get interrupted.

I have heard that alot when I was in highschool. especially "like"... one girl was doing a speech/report in my history class. so after she said "like" maybe the 20th time, I began a tally on my notebook until she finished. I got to about 60 on her 5 minute report...

But that is only mildly annoying compared to my friends girlfriend. she is very... screetchy.... but that's not it... it's her tick. she HAS to meow... she just.. meows... for no reason. is it quiet? "meow"... you like that joke? "hahaha.... meow" time to cuddle with your boyfriend? "meow" pissed off? "humph!.... meow..." GAHHHH! and he is moving back to the city soon... so he'll hang out with us more, which means she will too... ugh...

My girlfriend didn't believe me when I said it was that bad. so when we visited him in cali, after about the 20th meow she turned to me and mouthed "OH... MY.... GOD!" and just kept yelling "WHY!?" when we were in the car alone. lol

That sounds like what a certain long-running morning talk radio show down here does...They have a "Four 'ya know' rule" (tho they don't always enforce it). If a caller reaches four of the offending "words used as punctuation" offenses (ya know/uhm/etc.), the call is cut off right there and then.

I have heard them *audibly* counting them during a convo on more than one occasion. The caller failed to take the hint. I wanna say their record time for killing a call on that basis was under ten seconds.

                          I love it

One day, many years ago, I was waiting in line to rent a video game from a small games-only store. There were two kids (10-ish) ahead of me, trying to ask the girl at the counter a question... and it went something like this:

"Do you.. like... have... like... that game that like... the one where you like... fly around and like pick up those like things that like blow up and like... it's like a new game that like just came out like a week ago and like my friend said that you like have it now..." etc., etc., etc...

The funny thing was, the two kids were talking to each other mere SECONDS before that and they were conversing normally.

Then again, the girl at the counter was a very cute and buxom blond... that may have had something to do with it.
