  • Reading: A (totally) lost art

Lady comes up to me with two Transformers toys, both clad in brightly colored packaging clearly marked "Transformers." Tells me "My son loves Star Wars. Are these Star Wars toys?"

Le sigh. So many sarcastic ways to answer that question and I'm not allowed to use any of them.

Ugh, I'm sorry. :-/ I still get plenty of those.

"If it says 85 Watts, does it mean that it's 85 Watts?"

      "... ... ... ... no."
SC: "Are you new or something?"
Me: "Yes. Your planet is very backwards I hope you realize."

        People don't read.

I know it may be off topic but I'll present something I posted here several years ago. It's a classic.

Most of us know that Museums put out long, vertical banners to advertise shows and programs. About ten years ago there was a wonderful set at the Museum where I worked.

Reading from left to right you could see the following that advertised Public Programs, a One-Man Show in the Museum and a general blurb for the place.

Fall Film series FREE with Museum Admission!

        John Kelly MARSHALL!

        ART for all!

A few weeks after the banners went up the admissions desk was swamped with teenagers who wanted to know how they could enroll in the FREE MARTIAL ARTS program.

        Go figure.
Research is the art of reading what everyone has read and seeing what no one else has seen.

And to add to the confusion, they do make Star Wars Transformer toys

Uh, they do? Isn't that something unholy, akin to mixing Coke and Pepsi? The kind of stuff that should never ever leave the confines of a LJ fanfic community?

They sure do! Hasbro has the rights to the Star Wars toys, so it's not as much of a mixed bag as you'd think. They're rather "meh" as far as I'm concerned, though.
