  • "Can you tell me where the exit is?"

Yesterday I had a customer actually ask me something I cannot recall ever having been asked by a customer before. A guy comes up to me standing in the middle of the store and asks me where the exit is. and I point them in the right direction.
Um, yeah, ok I'm pretty sure the exit door is up near the front of the store closeby to the entrance door, just like all other stores and businesses (if there are any stores that have customers come in through the front and exit in the back of the store, please let me know) Come on people, its not that hard to figure out where the exit door is.
In my store, there are actually 3 exits they can leave the store out of, 4 if you count people who exit the store through the entrance door. But all of the exits are in the front section of the store.
And just when I thought customers couldn't possibly get any more stupid!

Last week, I had a lady ask me if we still made keys.

I've been working at the swamp for 11 years. At no time during those 11 years have we ever made keys. It's very possible we stopped offering that service two remodels ago, which would have been 1994 or so.

I gotta wonder where some of these people shop, since in my city my store and Wally World are the only big-box discount retail stores.

BK, you don't say how big your store is, but is there any chance he got turned around and lost himself? I know it's happened to me on occasion, but I usually just keep walking until I find my own way out

I work at a home improvement store and it is kinda big. When the customer asked this, he was already near the front of the store. Its really not that hard to navigate. I don't really see how they can possibly get themselves turned around and get lost in a store. The biggest place I can think of that a customer might get lost in is a mall. I personally just don't think this guy was firing on all cylinders.
Its 1 thing to ask where things are in the store, and then I can most certainly understand someone getting lost in a big store such as ours. But the exit? Never.

Many of the stores in the city centre here are in old buildings, and some of them have doors to the streets on opposide sides.

Closer to home, the "big box" place about half a mile away has doors on the front and the side. The first time I went in there, I left my bike by one door but left by another, and wondered where the bike racks had disappeared to. But once outside, I had landmarks to re-orient myself.

Our store has one exit=the mall. None of the entrances or exits to the mall are through stores.

Yet, occasionally we'll get people wander through Parcel Pickup and ask if it's an exit.
