  • That's Not A Woodpecker....

The other day I was trying to take a nap and I heard what I thought was a woodpecker.

I mean, we've got some really, really dumb woodpeckers around here that will peck at stuff that is NOT wood.....sidings of houses and stuff like that. I've heard woodpeckers trying to peck at the siding of my windows here before, and one once was trying to peck the life out of the siding of my parents' house before he rendered himself unconscious.

I got up and went to go outside and scare it away....only to find out that down the street, they were tearing up the sidewalk with a caterpillar, using a very pointy piece of machinery that pecks into the pavement and cracks it up into small pieces.

We used to have woodpeckers who particularly liked the metal flashing around chimneys. What they're actually doing is making noise to sound out their territory. The metal is much louder than wood, so they use it for this purpose.
