  • Sorry, no magic scanning faeries in the SCOs

Now, I know that self-checkout can be scary and confusing for some people, but this was a new one for me. A man walked up to the self-checkout, placed all his items on the weight bed, hit "English" to start the transaction...waited a moment...and started hitting the "Finish and Pay" button like he expected the computer to somehow automatically know everything he put on the bed.

I have to admit I let it go for a minute and watched him try to rearrange his items so they weren't touching each other, then rearrange them so they were all carefully within the bounds of the scale, before I went to go help him. It was just too entertaining.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

I don't see how that's going to stop a shoplifter . . . most of the ones we get simply go to another aisle, take the merchandise out of the packaging, dump or hide the packaging among the shelving and hide the product inside their clothing.

So how could we combat that other than having manufacturers put UPC bar codes on the merchandise itself within the packaging?

Oh, no! I wasn't even thinking about the shoplifting angle. I was totally looking at it from a shopper's point of view. No more lines to stand in!
