  • Oh the tales I will tell....

Currently, I am employed for a world-famous camera & imaging company, known for their cameras, printers, scanners, etc... etc... I won't say the name of the company, where my workplace is located, or even which country. I shall call the company "Howitzer".... Anyways, if anyone here uses one of our famous lines of digital SLR (DSLR) cameras, you will doubly appreciate this post.

Case 1: In dire need of a dose of RTFM

The following is a transcript taken from the "Please describe your problem" area of our customer support form - where the customer writes about the issues occurring to prompt the return to our factory repair facility. I did not receive this note (our senior tech had that honor), but he made sure it made the rounds of the entire shift, so we all had a roaringly good laugh at this dimwit!

    Here's the note:

"Whenever I press the shutter button halfway, I can see flashes of tiny red lights on the viewfinder. They appear and disappear instantly. The flashes appear to be showing in random places and they occur together with sounds of tiny lightnings or sparks."

............ *face palm, evil grin, unstoppable laughter*

Let me explain why to all you non-users: The lights he's talking about are the autofocus points, where the camera indicates where it finds the best contrast and sharpest focus, and where it will concentrate efforts to make sure things look good. When pushing the shutter button halfway, the camera performs said operation, then FLASHES the LIGHTS on the points it will use and beeps when they flash.....

So this moron was wasting his money (on shipping) and our time (to inspect the camera to ensure proper operation) because the camera is functioning AS IT SHOULD!

Half the basic point-and-shoots on the market do the same thing these days, though a lot of them don't have a proper viewfinder any more.

I was first introduced to the half-pressed shutter button feature on a second-hand Pentax ME Super, at least 15 years ago. If you are a photographer, you *will* recognise that model name. It doesn't have autofocus, but it does turn on the metering system when you half-press the button.
