  • Caffeine, a vital part of your child's diet (Long)

Here I am at work, doing some busy-work and keeping myself amused. It's an hour past check-out and three hours before check-in, so I am getting caught up on a few things I'd put aside. We only had a few check-outs today and one of them had never come down to check-out with me. But, that's pretty common. Housekeeping hadn't called to ask if they were a stay-over so I went ahead and ran the process myself.

Not more than a few minutes goes by before someone comes out of the elevator and grabs a luggage cart. She comes up to me and says her key isn't working. I immediately know who she is, room 217, my no-show for check-out. She had thought she could check-out when she liked. When I told her the actual checkout time (12 noon, it's later than a lot of hotels allow already) she is not only shocked, but genuinely sorry that she's so late. Easy enough for me to forgive. She gathers her things and begins the kids for leaving, but not before stoping for some coffee.

While she is at our coffee, her kids are running around the lobby. I'm used to some fairly demonic behaviours from some kids. These aren't bad themselves, but they have a rubber ball they are throwing against the walls. One plant down, then another. I ask them, very cheerfully, if they could be careful. There mom isn't looking at all. They hit the chandelier and I uneasily watch it sway abck and forth.

"Hey guys, what a great ball you have! Can I see what's on there?" The kids hand me the ball and brag about how they got the Dora the Explorer instead of the other one with an ugly cow on it. I nervously laugh and hold on to the ball until mom comes around the corner. But, here's my next shock, the mom comes around the corner with 8 cups of coffee. I don't know why she needed so many, but I guessed it was to keep up with her kids.

"Need some more energy?" I ask her. "Oh no, this isn't for me, it's for the kids. They LOVE this stuff." Huh.....ummm.....4 cups of coffee each? I decided not to interfere. Not while I'm on the job anyway. I just really hope the end to this won't be what I suspect it will....

OMG, if she was stuck in a car with them, she must be taking some heavy duty chill pills.

On the other hand, if the kids have ADHD or ADD, the caffeine is a quick and cheap way to chill them out.

Either way, someone is feeling good.
Make a list of important things to do today.
At the top of your list, put 'eat chocolate'

        Oooooooogggg....

Those kids hearts are going to explode any day now! That is not healthy.

And here I was amazed when I saw a family walk-by with 3-children all under the age of 8 or so chugging-down on 24oz cans of Monster!

What a great way to stop the MOOOOOOM! I GOTTA GO TO THE BATHROOOOOOOOM before it starts.

Unless those kids are like my Dad....coffee goes right through him (as if his gut isn't even there).

I had to refuse a sale just yesterday to a boy aged about 12 who wanted to buy a can of Red Bull... his mother was at the next till with her own shopping, heard what I was saying and piped up' "well I'm his mum, I'll get it for him". Whereupon I had to explain that's no different to me selling it directly to him - I still know who it's intended for. She was OK about it, though. It just didn't seem to have registered with her that this stuff isn't just another fruit flavoured fizzy drink.

The company I work for doesn't restrict sales of these, however as there's enough bad press with them, most people are smart enough not to go buying them for their children. That includes the energy shots. We do reserve the right to refuse sales however, so that's not a problem.

Does it come up asking for ID when you scan it. Strange, where I work that doesn't come up. Also I 've had lots of parents buy energy drinks and give them right to thier kids. I know it's not right, but since it's not enforced like alcohol or tobacco, I can't really do anything about it. Do they enforce the no selling energy drinks policy to minors at your store.
Take this job and shove it. I ain't workin here no more.

At the c-store, the energy shots/pills/chews/gum are age-restricted, but the drinks themselves aren't. It's rather amusing to watch the face of an underage person fall when you tell them you can't sell them that energy shot because they're only 16. Once, one tried to get a (now former) co-worker (who was off duty, I think) to buy them, because she knew them. Wrong! Not happening! Move along, kiddies. Nothing for you here!

Is it illegal to sell these to minors? Why?

(I guess I am under a rock regarding these...I have never drunk one and frankly I know nothing about them. I just thought they had a lot of caffeine in them).

It's not just an insane amount of caffeine. They have other alkaloids and a lot of sugar (which I'm assuming is why they taste so foul). I had one as an experiment once, never again. It resulted in me hitting some people, which of course made the emotional roller coaster I was on even worse. (I'm aware that it's still my fault even with stimulants and depressants fighting out in my system, however I have behavioural issues which were not helped by the chemical cocktail).

It's dangerous to drink too many at one time as well. Can mess up your heart.

Quoted for truth. I was diagnosed w/ADHD when I was little (back when it was referred to as hyperactivity), and as an adult, sometimes a can of Mountain Dew will settle me down enough to actually be sleepy. I have to be pretty wound up, tho, for it to have any effect.

Nice to have you join me under the rock.

I don't drink them, never have. I've smelled a couple and can't figure out how you can drink something that smells that bad.

As far as I'm aware, here, anybody that has the money can buy them regardless of age.
