  • Where the FURk is My Coat?!

Years ago I worked at an art gallery in the University area of Houston. We had been there for about a year, having moved from Southwest Houston.

One busy Saturday as customers are all around looking at art and bringing in framing orders, a woman came in looking aghast.

Fur Coat Woman: "Where is the fur coat store that used to be here!!??"

Me: "I'm sorry, we've been here about a year, and I have no knowledge of what was here before."

FCW: "I left my coat here to be cleaned! Where is the owner?!"

Me: "Ma'am, I have no idea."

FCW: "Well, you have to go and find his number for me! He has my mink coat!!"

Me: "I'm sorry, but I can't help you. You might call the management company."

    FCW: "Get me their number-NOW!"

I am the only one in the shop, I have no idea who we rent from as I only work part-time and pretty much only do the framing. My bosses aren't in and I tell her so.

FCW: "Well, this is on your head! I'm coming back later and YOU HAD BETTER TELL ME WHERE MY FUR COAT IS!!"

She left in a huff. Never saw her again.

Lots of cleaners offer storage as well as cleaning for items like fur coats, wedding dresses, bedding, etc.

Yes, but you'd think they'd contact their customers if they were moving or going out of business.... oddness.

wonder if they sent out notices...
and if they maybe sold the unclaimed merchandise?

If they did send out any notices, chances are the FCW thought it was an advertisement or other junk mail and tossed it.

it depends, if they went bankrupt then debt collectors may have taken what they could to make their money back

CW: So what exactly do you do in retentions?
              Me: ummm, I ....retent stuff?

It seems that maybe she would have at least driven down the street in the last year plus.

...okay, I'm still trying to wrap my still-hung-over brain around this. She just remembered her coat after she'd dropped it off a year ago. God, I hope that woman doesn't have any kids...

My bet is she was in the wrong shopping center altogether.

She probably found the coat at home in her closet.
