  • Out of Context much?

The other evening it was dead in the deli, yet there were three of us scheduled. We were generally killing time til we could clean stuff, standing in a cluster chatting, all three of us interacting with each customer, a nice light night. Until Mr Grizzled Drunk comes up and orders his stuff.
Now, we were having a discussion about sleep, energy drinks and whatnot, and it turned out like this:
    I'm slicing meat for customer,
CW1: "Wouldnt it be great if there was a machine that you could, like, plug in for 10-15 minutes a day and recharge, not have to do full nights of sleep every night..."
Me: "Yeah, that would be great"
CW2: "Naaah...think about if criminals never slept, the world would go crazy.."
CW1: "True...plus with all that extra time, humans would find bigger and better ways to destroy the world. We'd kill ourselves."
Mr GD: "That's not funny! My best friend killed himself!"
    all 3 of us
I apologise, and try to explain that we werent making light of suicide (even though he just witnessed the whole conversation, which was spoken to the group, including him, you know what I mean?)
Mr GD: I know, I know you didnt know. ::gets blustery::: He blew his brains out! Came home from work and found his wife had left him, took everything he owned and he fucking killed himself!"
At this point, I think all 3 of us are silently praying "Make him go away!", it was the most awkward uncomfortable moment ever in the deli!
I finish up his order, with another apology, and he looks me dead in the eye and tells me "If I could get away with it, if I wouldnt get caught, I'd kick the shit out of her." (apparently meaning the friend's wife)
Does "Thank you, Have a nice day?" even cover it at this point.

We all kinda looked at each other when he left
    Seriously?

Yeah. The "We'd kill ourselves" part sounded like it had more to do with wars than with suicide.
To err is human, to blame someone else shows good management skills.

The guy probably hasn't gotten over it, so anything that reminds him of it is going to set him off. You had no way to know that. It's pretty clear that you weren't talking about suicide.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.
