  • I'm gonna be a land tycoon!

We have in this area some old 1/2 acre parcels that were sold many years ago & a lot were passed on to children & grandchildren. It was sort of a scam, they never saw the land & it's pretty worthless. So we'd get people like this:

"I inherited this land,I figure it's worth some money, can you show me where it's at?"

    "No problem,follow me"

So I get in my 4WD truck & go as far as they can in their car,it's only about a mile.
Then we stop at the bottom of the boulder-strewn,overgrown with trees,30 degree slope, utility access "road" & I point to the ridge 300 yards south of it...

    "There's your land"

    "Uhhhh....Can we drive there?"

"Not in that" (one guy thought he could in his 2WD Blazer)

    "How do we get there?"

    "Walk"

this is where it once got really funny

"Can I put a cabin up there?"

"Yeah,if you can get the materials up there" (with no real roads)

    "Can I get power?"

"Not for any amount of money"(at the time I knew the power company had no plans to run power to that area)

    "Can I drill a well?"

I jokingly replied "If you're gonna throw away money then give it to me"

He looked at me... "You'll do it then?"

I did like the guy that had me get him close to his land, then laughed & said he'd leave it to his kids,he was funny.

Maybe it is just because of where I am from but I know at least half a dozen people who live in homes that don't really have road access. Most of them can get in and out without issues in something with good 4wd from spring to fall and just stock the hell up for winter (they have can get out with an atv/horse/donkey in the winter). Solar and wind combos give them all the power they need, some of them even have satellite internet and tv (which I find kind of weird but I guess it helps with cabin fever), though at least it is easy enough to drill a well around those parts and it is rather lush land so you don't need a grocery store if you have the time, energy, and commitment.

Getting the kids to school was kind of a challenge; I always got a kick out of seeing people waiting for the bus with their parent and a pony.

That being said I know most people aren't really up for that kind of life.

Oh I'm jealous. I wish I could have done that, then again I lived in the center of town and the bus stop was just down the hill from me....it was a big hill (when you have short legs) , we still could have used the pony....right?

This is mountain country,30-60 degree slopes & it's all solid rock, even putting in an outhouse (legal in that area if you conform to county standards) would require equipment that can't make it there.A septic trank would cost more than the land is worth even if you could get it up there, which is well-nigh impossible.
Drilling a well is an exercise in futility, again, can't get the equipment there & after all, this is the desert,so no water no mater how deep you drill.
But it's a great place for me & my brother to take our Jeeps rock crawling
