  • Memorial Day is right around the corner... or is it?

I had this doozy of a conversation while at work tonight:

Customer: It seems very quiet in here tonight.
Me: It's usually quiet the first few days after a holiday.
Customer: Oh yes right. But what about Memorial Day?
Me: Well Memorial Day isn't for another month or so yet.
Customer: Ooh. What's the next holiday then?
    Me: Mother's Day.
Customer: Oh yes Mother's Day. Memorial Day is in September or October isn't it?
Me: *thinks wow my mind just went numb!*

Maybe they were thinking of Veterans Day? Except that's in November...

Probably thinking of Labor Day in September. My friends (and sometimes myself) can't get Memorial Day and Labor Day straight. It's always "that one in spring" or "that one in fall".

I'd probably have said, "Yep, you're right. Labor day is the first Monday in September.' Watching them try to figure out if they had actually said labor day would be fun. Cause you know they wouldn't admit to memorial day.

lol. To be fair, I wouldn't know when it is either but I work in hotels. I'm not from the US though I live here. Some of the holidays are different than they are in Canada, including Thanksgiving (its in October in Canada but November in the US).

To be entirely honest, I can not get memorial day and labor day straight either. I know vaguely when they are and plan accordingly, but I can never remember which is which without looking it up.

Memorial Day and Labor Day are pretty much the same to me. They both fall on Mondays, and I always work Mondays.

There are three big weekends in the US, sprinkled around the year. Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. The easy way to remember which comes first is that they happen in reverse alphabetical order.

Of the ten Federal holidays in the US, five are Monday holidays. They are:

Martin Luther King Day - 3rd Monday in January.
                    Washington's Birthday* - 3nd Monday in February.
Memorial Day - last Monday in May.
Labor Day - first Monday in September.
Columbus Day - 2nd Monday in October.

Thanksgiving Day is the 4th Thursday in November.

New Year's Day (January 1), Independance Day (July 4), Veteran's Day (November 11) and Christmas Day (December 25) fall on the actual date unless that date is a Friday or Saturday. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, it is treated as a holiday on the preceding Friday for leave and pay purposes. If it falls on a Sunday, it is treated as a holiday on the following Monday for leave and pay purposes. Washington's Birthday and Christmas fall on Sundays this year, and New Year's Day was on a Saturday.

*This holiday is designated as "Washington’s Birthday" in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees. Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is OPM policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law. is the official name of the holiday.

President's day is NOT recognized by the vast majority of employers... especially in my area.
