So I had a customer that had the misfortune of getting the "Leaky Milk Jug." She hands it to me, so I can put it in a bag to contain the leak until I can dump it out. I tell her that she (or one of her kids) can run back and get another one while I ring out her cartful of purchases. She then tells me that she is in a hurry and doesn't have time and that I should go back and get it for her.

I tell her okay, and laugh to myself that she has doubled her own wait time. If she went back, I could have had most if not all of her stuff scanned by the time she got back. However, since I had to leave my register, nothing gets scanned and she has to stand there and wait.

The worst part is I don't think she even realized that she was to blame for her own delay. If she had been honest and said "I'm too lazy to walk back," I would have respected that a little more.

Isn't that what kids are for, though? If mom's too lazy, send one of the rug-rats.

Faith is about what you do. It's about aspiring to be better and nobler and kinder than you are. It's about making sacrifices for the good of others. - Dresden
