  • Really?

After she asked me this question I was stuck between laughing because I thought maybe, just maybe she was joking and trying to pick up my jaw from the floor.

As I'm talking around asking if anyone needs help finding things a lady walks up with some kind of science toy. It was like a mini lab thing that you could do projects with. In the corner is the 6+ to let people know that this toy is for children 6 or older. The customer asks me all these questions about it. And then she drops this one:

Crazy Lady: Ok I really like this. I think he would have a lot of fun with this. By the way what does this 6+ mean?
Me: Well ma'm that is the age that the toy maker believes a child can play with it. I know it says 6 but if your child is a little younger if you watch them it should still be ok.
Crazy Lady: Oh.....so you think 18 months is a little young?

Me: Ummm, yes ma'm I would say 18 months would be just a little too young for this toy.
Crazy Lady: Well I guess I'll think about it. Thanks for your help.

I'm really hoping it was just a joke but I think she was serious.

I really hope it wasn't her own child and she was looking for someone elses. Who would make sure the child got to play with it at the right age!

Customers should always be served . . . to the nearest great white.

Oy. I don't even have kids....and even I know that's too young for something like that. I bet she not only doesn't have any, she's never been around an 18-month old kid.

Some things you use common sense (I know -they don't have any) when using the age bit. Like my 3 yo grandson is getting the REAL construction workbench set for Christmas even though it is 6+. Since he steals his dads tools and uses them PROPERLY to take apart his toys and put them together. and since his normal playmates are all 6-9. yeah. (& yes his parents WILL supervise). But a science kit and an 18 month old? No way in hades would I put those 2 together. That's still the 'just about everything in the mouth' stage.

It reminds me that I've been asked more than once what size shoe a child of a particular age would wear, Some people have no concept when it comes to kids.
