A guy called me, and asked for an update on his boat. I got his name and started going through our records. He wasn't in there, at all. So I worked on getting to the bottom of this. After a while, he asked:
"Aren't you the one located on <street>?"
Me: Nope. We're on <street.>
Him: But you are <company> right?
Me: Yes we are.
Him: Oh God... I took my boat to the other marina. I'm so sorry. I'm an idiot.
I take a deep breath, and manage not to laugh.
Me: Would you like me to get my boss so he can help you arrange getting it here?
Him: That would be nice. I'm not sure how I will get it over to you guys. I borrowed my friend's trailer to get it to the other marina.
Me: Alright, I'll put you on hold and go find him.
I put him on hold, burst into laughter, and go get my boss.
We typically share business with the smaller Marina in the area sending customers his way for one reason or another, but the type of boat he had was our specialty, so it turned out the other Marina had asked if the guy really meant to hand that boat over to us instead of him, and hadn't worked on it yet. We were able to get his boat and after that, it was an easy fix.
