  • key reader idiots :P

So I get this teary young woman on slow night. I used to get lots of these, because their boyfriends kicked them out and they have no place left to go. I would been willing give them a discount just because I felt bad for them, but most of them were so irritable that I usually didn't. Hey, direct your anger at your stud, not me beyotch! :P
Anyway, it's late at night and I hear the doors swing open, signifying someone's staying here, and a whole bunch of young women come stumbling in, making a racket. The usual after bar crowd. One of them's crying. Whatever. Broke up with her bf. I ignore them. I assume that one of them is throwing a party in her room and just hope they don't bother their neighbors.
Thankfully, they didn't. One of them, the crying one, comes to me all tearstained and asks for a room. I give her the rate, (she's says ok) and the keys and she takes the keys and stumbles away.
A few minutes later, she comes back down and says the keys aren't working. What? I just programmed them. I take them and check, yup they're programmed perfectly. Since it's was deliciously slow night, I tell her that I'll go up with her and open it.
As we get on the elevator, I figure that she probably stuck the keys the wrong way in. Not the 1st time, definitely not the last. I bet way in the future when the doors are opened with retina scans, some people'll still somehow manage to put their eyeballs upside down in the scans. She definitely didn't seem in her right mind right now. I really hope that it isn't a key reader battery problem, because we'd have to go all the way down and get another room. I notice she isn't acting like when I'd have to take others for the same reason, she's looking away distantly, rather than glaring at me accusingly like the others. But I chalk it up to drunkenness.
So we get to the room, I walk ahead, and fit the key inside the reader. It beeps green and I push on the handle and then the door...but to my surprise, I didn't have to push at all, the door was already completely open! I say, "Uh, there you go," and she says "Thanks!" grabs the keys again, and walks in.
    Ok....
There are two things I can think of.
One: She put the keys the in the reader and waited. Didn't turn the handle & push. Just waited. Probable.
Two: She just wanted to get on my nerves, & left the door open for me to find because....she's...crazy.
    Extremely likely.
I think both now, actually. One and then two.
Another time, I had to open the door up for this old man who went down twice because he claimed his keys weren't working. So I go up. All the way the guy's eyes are burning holes in my skull. With some trepidation, I fit the key in the reader and pull it out. The door beeps green and I turn the handle. "There you go, it's open," I say to him.
"How'd you do that?" he demands, taking the key. "Wait." He closes it again so it locks and literally stabs in the key so fast I'm surprised the key went in at all. The reader beeps red. He does it again, still red. "See?!?!"
I tell him to do it more slowly because the magnetic strip needs to roll down the reader head to read it. 3rd time, stab. 4th, stab. Stab, stab, stab. Finally, after the 10th or so, he somehow controls his arm and it opens. Looking embarassed, he thanks me and goes in. Finally. Really? Wtf. Some pple...
    Can't reason with the unreasonable.

See I'm terrible at that and always scan my keycard too fast the first time. However I don't blame the hotel and I don't ask for new ones until I know its the key and I've tried it s-u-p-e-r-s-l-o-w a few times (and even got hubby to try it).

And i never pretend its the staff members fault. If they fail they fail.
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi
