  • ..wait, what did you say? D:

So the cashier tonight made me alternately want to laugh and cry. As I was standing in line, some young adults in front of me were buying beer, and she made them both hand over IDs so she could check them. They almost started to give her a hard time, but she had That Glare.

After they left and she started scanning my items, I told her kudos for checking.

"Well, not to be offensive, but mexicans and asians are just so youthful looking that I can never tell their age! I just wish you and I could age that way, eh? Would need to card you!"

    ...wait wat.

As my brain went into halt mode, she held up my shirt I was buying and was like "awww, they have such cute tops this year! I'm so glad they're big enough, you know?"

    .........wait wat deux.

I don't know if she was indirectly hinting that I look way old and fat, but maybe I'm just a bit hypersensitive right now. I waited until she turned around before I did a massive Picard-worthy facepalm.

    I know she didn't mean it, but oy vay! I only just turned 26, and all the other places I've been, they freaking ID me for buying R rated movies! ;_;

I've seen the age thing with the asians and mexicans. Should see my boyfriends little sister. I sometimes swear she isn't over 12 years old and yet if she turns around you see a petite 22 year old.

With the cute tops comment...I can atest to that one as well. I have noticed a LOT of the cuter tops are only for the up to medium crowd or the xlarges are the tiny bopper xlarges that are small to the rest of the world.

Too true, actually. I shop in the juniors section and get larges because....chesties. :< They ruin a lot of nice shirts for me.

I'm with you on the sizing, Seraph. Also, you are not 38. Just saying.

I just went clothes shopping today and I thought about getting a few shirts. But I decided not to for a few reasons, one of which is I can't fit in a lot of the juniors shirt anymore. *glares at her bewbs* I can wear the jeans and pants though.

For the record: I just turn 25.

Eta: oh and I got id'ed getting booze tonight too.

Yeah, it's probably best to just assume that she was just complimenting the customers in front of you for being youthful and then complimenting you for being, um, perky.

She needs to meet my husband. He's white and 33 but looks like his 16 when he shaves, 18 when he doesn't. Just 3 years ago a couple of 15 teen year olds were hitting on him and his twin brother. And no it wasn't an I want to date an older guy thing. I was right there and they both kept telling them that they were lying trying to pretend that they were older, and if they didn't want to talk to them all they had to was say so and not lie.

                    but she had That Glare.
                    This one?

(Sorry, first thing I thought of when I saw that statement.)

As for the rest of her comments, wut? I can see that she's not trying to be insulting, but... but... Ok, brain is completely derailed.

And I wouldn't know about the whole "youthful appearance" thing. I haven't been carded since I was 15.

It's not because of how you look really. At least not the way you're thinking.

In one of my psychology classes it was mentioned in one of the lessons - it's harder to judge the age of other ethnicities unless you've been exposed to them most of your life.

You've learned to associate specific looks with specific ages - but only for your own ethnicity. So when trying to judge the age of an ethnicity you're not use to... you tend to judge wrong.
