Customer purchaced some parts for his bike from my company and brought it to a Harley Davidson Dealer to have it installed. This required a download to be performed on the bike so it will run. Harley refused to do the download because it is an aftermarket part. The moron customer calls me screaming that it is our fault that harley can't install the download. I said " wait a minute, Harley can but refuses to do the download". He replies, the add on your website says that anyone can install it. So I said, yes, anyone can. Harley just wont. He says, how am I supposed to know that? I said, that is common knowledge in the motorcycle world sir. He said, well I didn't know that. I said, well sir, you are not common now are you. He told me to fuck myself and hung up. what a baffoon.

As someone who just got my Class 6 <bg>Motorcycle in my area</bg> license last spring, this is news to me. Admittedly I ride a Suzuki but that is besides the point.

Now his attitude on finding out if he wanted it he would have to do it himself or find a different mechanic is just sucky.

Yuppers, 'tis the season. Around here they are realizing they have lost the bike key over the winter.
We don't do service calls to make bike keys for a number of reasons.
One of them being that they usually think they know all about their precious bikes. "Then you should also know where your key is, eh?"

I'd never assume that any customer would know something that was supposedly "common knowledge". That's a pretty judgy assumption to be making.

        His reaction was sucky though.

I've had people bring an entire steering column into the store to make a key for the ignition switch that they couldn't figure out how to remove.

Worse was a photo I saw in one of the locksmith trade rags back in the late '80s where someone had brought in an entire dashboard...

Had an opposite event happen yesterday at "Orange Apron" - I was asking about pre-"Stoopid key" rekeying kits (3rd party) for Weiser locks, associate showed me what he thought I was talking about (he was right), and said he didn't understand how they worked. No other customers, so I gave him a brief explanation - and told him about how OA used to do "keyed alike" locks (i.e. the associate had to swap out pins on one lock to match the other).

They have aftermarket rekeying kits now?

This is news to me (not having worked full-time in the locksmith industry since 1993). I've always switched pins out to rekey cylinders.

Are these things foolproof? (Yeah I know, you make something foolproof and G_d sends you a bigger fool.) I'd hate to think of what might happen if they somehow managed to make it change half the pins, for example; the new key wouldn't work, and neither would the old one...

Haven't used the set yet, but it comes with 3 keys and enough pins to do 6 locks. The pins are different colours - don't know if it's a code for cut height (same colour would mean the same height of pin across sets), or if it's a code for hole position (same colour would have different heights for different sets).

It's common knowledge in the world of motorcycles/cars/computers/etc that the dealer or manufacturer will not install aftermarket stuff for you. you need to go to an independent shop or DIY.

besides, half the fun of modifying a motorcycle/car is the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
the pride I felt when i finished the carb rejet on my motorbike made all the hassles worth while.

I guess I am spoiled by dealership they sell aftermarket parts so if I need them they will install them too.
