  • And you expect to run a business?

    Call out of the blue:

C: I'm just looking for information - how much would I have to put down on a $100,000 loan for a business?
    Me: Purchase? At least 10%.
    C: What's that in dollars?
Me: $10,000 *Gee, was that really that hard to figure out?*

The customer goes on to ask me about rates, terms, etc., but really? You think you'll be able to run a business when you can't calculate the most basic percentages?

Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

I don't suppose a math test is part of your loan application? I really hope this get declined.

We'll have to see if she actually applies first.

It could just be that percentages throw her....
I don't work so well with them... other math I get just fine, and can usually do in my head, but percents - I get dumb...

Lots of people think they should start their own business because they would be better at it than the competitions. Most of the time, they are right. Unfortunately, most of those people have no training whatsoever in basic business concepts like HR, finance, payroll, etc.

Wait a minute. Was her name Betty? And was she opening a restaurant?

No, it's not Betty, but I found out today that she and her husband are looking at buying a restaurant/gas station. It's a little place out in the sticks, but everybody around here knows about it. It's the only restaurant or gas station for about 25 miles in any direction.

They've offered $60,000 for the business. But they want a loan for $100,000. They seem to think the appraisal is going to come in high enough to justify that kind much of a loan, but I don't see it happening. Also, that makes it sound like they don't have any money to invest in the business, which doesn't inspire confidence that they'll be able to pay back the loan if the business doesn't cash flow.

So, yeah. Nothing there to change my first impression of someone who's unable to run a business.
