Queuing is more complicated to spell than do

I don't work in retail anymore (yay!) so am getting out all my stories from when I still there that I didn't post.

The lane for queuing and the direction people should queue in was clearly marked. We tried to make this even clearer by having staff man the tills closest to the front of the queue. But there would always be a customer who somehow managed to miss this and would end up standing at the wrong end getting ignored because we didn't realise they were queuing.

But one lady sticks in my mind. There was a queue of about six people, all stood in the right place. So where does Stupid Lady (SL) stand? Of course, she stands at the wrong end. I'm not sure when she realised but all I heard was my coworker saying, "The queue actually starts at that end." I looked up and see SL had come up the CW's till, bypassing all the other people who were waiting, saying, "But I've been stood here! I didn't know the queue was that end!" In this voice like it couldn't possibly be her fault that she didn't pay attention to her surroundings

Then she started trying to argue with CW to let her queue-jump and be served next because she had been waiting, even though she had been waiting in the wrong place. CW stood her ground and was trying to get her to go to the back of the queue, but the customer at the front took pity on SL and let her go first.

Never mind the fact that the people in the queue have been waiting longer than that lady has because they went to the right place and she jumped ahead of all of them. Ugh, I can't stand people like that. I bet she knew damn well where to go, but decided she was better than the personnes petites in line and should be able to traipse her way to the front.

Which is fine - as long as they then go to the end of the line and take SL's place. Otherwise they've just unilaterally decided to let her in in front of everyone else in the line. Go do your white knighting somewhere that doesn't screw them.

^ I thought that exact thing at the time! MsWhiteKnight bumped everyone else down the queue without even asking them. Which doesn't make her much better.

That almost happened to me when I was waiting in line to get my first non-driver ID. There were separate lines for different things and some dodo suddenly realized she was in the wrong line, and told her friend that she should be ahead of me because she'd been waiting longer.

Tough. Not my fault you couldn't read the gigantic sign hanging over the counter. I gave her a Look and she shut her mouth and went to the back of the line.

And odd how it's a disparaging term now. 'cause even when it IS altruistic (rare) it's usually not well planned.

That automatically makes it not the driver's fault, but the person who rear-ended them.

White knighting came about from the Internet. It's an "internet personality type" - it's been around for a bit - where someone jumps forward to defend someone else, usually a boy defending a girl (usually an attention whore/Drama Queen, get it? { }), even if he doesn't know her/the person being defended. There is the mind set that people attach to it that the White Knights do it because they believe they'll get something out of it from the girl/person they are defending, but that's mostly used as a straw-man argument by the person arguing with the White Knight.

Example: "White Knight" was an insult thrown around on the Blizzard (World of Warcraft) forums when someone would argue against someone reaming Blizzard's dev team, or demanding/whining/bitching about some game mechanic, other players, etc. The "defending" person could have the most sound, logically, and well written argument ever, and there would still be a good number of players who would jump into the thread just to stay, "STFU White Knight! You think Blizzard's gonna give you loot/needs you to defend them/etc. because you defended them on the forums?" (Of course, in this example, White Knight is being used improperly.)

There are a few other "Internet Personalities" that came about with the popularity of forums and other internet socialization, they're actually pretty interesting to read about. Of course, the problem then is that you start seeing them EVERYWHAR!!!

Well yes, but if you're seeing the term "White Knight" on the Internet - especially as an insult - it's much more likely that the person is referring to the Internet-created definition.

Of course a writing major knows the "White Knight vs Black Knight in fictional/fantasy."

Taking pity on someone due to their stupidity only reinforces the stupidity. Let them take the consequences for being stupid; only then will they learn better.
