  • Brainless Customer

Picture the scene. I'm alone, dealing with a huge queue, and while I'm doing this, a man walks up to a pump and picks it up. I can't see what he's doing so I don't authorise it. I mention this to the customer I'm currently serving, and the one behind him says, "That guy's trying to fill a plastic milk bottle."

A plastic milk bottle?! For those not in the know, a milk bottle does not feature in the short list of containers that you're allowed to fill with fuel. I continue to not authorise the pump, hoping that the man will come inside to find out why so that I can inform him of this. Instead, he goes to another pump. I now can clearly see that he has a six pint empty milk bottle which he's attempting to fill; again, I don't authorise the pump. There's really no excuse for this level of idiocy; even if you were unaware, there's a sign on every single pump that tells you what containers you're allowed to fill with fuel. You can also buy a jerry in the kiosk.

I call my collegue, who at the time is conferring with the security guard; he goes outside and tells the brainless customer to come in and get a jerry. The customer refuses on the grounds that they're too expensive; they're a fiver, which isn't that much to pay, and seeing as you're not going to get any fuel til you buy one... Anyway, the man says he's going elsewhere. Good luck on finding a petrol station that allows you to fill a milk bottle, moron.

In case you folks didn't know, the plastic used in modern milk bottles will last approximately fifteen minutes after exposure to gasoline. After that point it will begin leaking. Not Recommended.

Around here, he probably would find some place.

2 pints to a quart. Quart is a little less than a litre.

American or British ??(I'm too tired to do the math right now )

The American pint is 16 fluid ounces.

The Imperial (British) pint is 20 fluid ounces.

And the ounces are slightly fifferent as well........

When I was fourteen, I learned that a styrofoam cup cannot be used as even a temporary receptacle for gasoline (I was attempting to refuel a lawnmower at the time). The experience did lead, though, to, ummm, *ahem*, the sorts of experiments in which teenage boys tend to get involved.

And not a very good one. Those who do huff generally don't try and FILL the bottle to the top. Although you are right, it could've been a huffer.

Huffing is a huge problem in some Aboriginal communities around here, so in those communities, Opal Fuel is used. The fuel is meant to remove the ingredient which gets you high.

No, the ounces are identical, only the pints change. 1 UK Imperial pint=0.568 litres.

We've had people try and fill all sorts of receptacles before; mostly for lawnmowers or cuz they're heading out to save someone who's run out of petrol. The list not only includes milk bottles (a popular choice, due to their handle rather than for the paper thin plastic; fifteen minutes before leaking is rather optimistic due to the plastic having been reduced to "save the planet") but also lemonade bottles, buckets, watering cans, a plastic bag once (yes, the shopping kind that has holes in the bottom) and once a Coke can. I've also heard of a crazy woman trying to fill a potty with petrol.

And of course, when we tell them that they have to buy a jerry before we let them have their fuel, there's the endless whinge of "But it's too expensive!" Firstly, a fiver is not expensive. Second, it's a container which will actually hold while you take it home or go and rescue your friend. And finally, we value our petroleum licience, which we'd be in danger of losing if we just let people fill any old crappy container with fuel.

Actually, the fluid ounces (not dry ounces) are slightly different.

1 Imperial fluid ounce = 0.960759940 US fluid ounce
