  • Things to not say to sick people.

So, we had a man come in having a heart attack. Legitimately having a heart attack. We were hurriedly getting him ready to go to the heart catheterization lab and there was a frenzy of activity happening.

One of the nurses, M, was speaking to the patient, trying to keep him informed of the happenings and what not.

After speaking to him for a bit M says "Well, i'm sure you're tired of me talking and rambling. Ill just go stand over here and be quiet. Ill let you rest in peace."

Now, it was meant well but when you have a man who is in the middle of a life threatening situation this may not be the best thing to say. The patient and his wifes eyes bugged out of their heads and started at M, and most of us had to excuse ourselves out of the room (by this time the patient was ready to go upstairs) to giggle.

The patient made it upstairs and is doing well, this was a couple of days ago.

We made fun of M for the rest of the night.

Dont tell the sick to rest in peace. It freaks them out

Coffee should be strong, black and chewy! It should strip paint and frighten small children.

I had my surgeon tell me not to, "bust a gut" after I had major abdominal surgery (I had been asking him about physical activity). I just stared at him for a second, before the color drained from his face and he started apologizing profusely. We both had a good laugh about it.

Not in a medical context, but a few years back I saw a tire shop advertising a "Blowout sale".
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.
