  • Armed Police Showed Up...

This is a story I heard from my mother. My mum works two nights a week in a supermarket stocking shelves. She only does this during the summer because she is a teaching assistant, so with no schools open she goes a bit stir crazy.

Anyway, someone new was starting, and the new girl was put on the registers. My mum said right away she got a feeling that the new girl...wasn't too bright!

Its a slow night, and the new girl is sitting at the registers, twiddling her thumbs, when she notices a shiny red button under her register...

Curious, new girl decides to push the shiny red button and see what happens. Nothing happens! So she pushes it again...and again...and AGAIN.

I think we know where this is going...

She was pushing the silent alarm! A truck full of armed police turned up at the store, scaring the life out of the employees and customers. It takes about half an hour to difuse the situation and convince the police that no robbery has taken place.

Amazingly, she still has her job.

And I bet the buzzer when "Dee-Dee-Dee" at the police station, too.

      Sorry, I know it's bad.

Dumb to push a button you know nothing about? Yes! But..... the jobs I've had with panic buttons involved, it was the FIRST thing I was told about once we got to that area. DO NOT POKE THIS!!!! False alarms cost us xxxx. Cops called for nothing are irritable. Cops come less quickly to places that have many false alarms. Emergency calls get the owner/manager called at 3:00 am, etc. etc. My thinking is that someone fell down a bit on the training end of this girl's orientation too.

"Hey, kid, you see that red button there?"
          "Yeah."
          "Never push the red button."
"Oh, okay." *jerks hand away from button*

I am reminded of "I Hate My 30s" when whatshisface was gonna rob the place, but decided to check his balance instead, and the guy behind the counter's hand was practically having a seizure trying not to press the alarm.

Well now, don't be to quick to think she is stupid.

We have 15 Subway stores in our group. We recently did a total remodel on one. I am usually the sucker that gets conned into going up and taking down the POS systems and then reinstalling them once the remodel is done. In the other 14 stores there is no silent alarm button. This particular store just happens to be in a bigger city. So dumb dumb me has just finished setting up the POS system. I look down and see this button. Like I said, we do not have a button in any of the other stores. As I push it I ask, "hey what is this for". Yep, silent alarm
Thank goodness everyone thought it was funny and we were able to call off the brigade. My only defense was that I had spent 10 hours working that day before getting to this particular store to help out.

We had a silent alarm at the gas station I worked at and most of the people there were pretty smart....it was whoever designed the layout of the store who had a problem.

We had a small container of rollers for plastic bags just under the counter so you could just reach down and grab the bag that you wanted. Well, they put the alarm RIGHT next to that. Every now and then someone would accidently miss the bags and set off the alarm.

Yeah, it cost the store money but the cops weren't too upset. Not much goes on in our town and our gas station always gave the cops who came in free coffee. In fact, we were one of the places they would use if they needed to meet somebody away from the station for police reports in the area and such so they came in pretty often

                        Hahaha.

We don't have a silent alarm, but we do have a "Turn off all pumps immediatley switch" which I have done now...twice. It's in the dumbest spot. We have this roller cart thing that sits under the counter, so whenever we need to get paper for the POS, we have to get it there. Well, lucky me, I had hit my head twice on the shutoff switch.

Where I work they used to have the silent alarms down by the tills where customers couldn't see them... But NOW they have it where the customer will see you press it and its in every OTHER window. WTF were they thinking?

One of my co-workers accidentally pressed it. She knocked the calculator over and went to reach for it and somehow triggered it. I don't know how but I looked over and there were a bunch of security surrounding her. Nice to know they really can haul ass when needed.

We had that problem at the gas station as well. But our shutoff switch was on the register next to the single pump stop. Whenever it was hit, it took about 10 minutes to restart from the time we started the restart process. Trying to explain what happened to a room of very unhappy customers was not fun
