  • a month out of date...

So, we're changing our packaging labels recently, so I've been doing a lot of delving into shelves and shifting stuff around lately to get the old packaging at the front. One one of the shelves I found a product that was a month out of date and looking pretty manky. As It's my job to do the date checks... whoops. Missed that one...

I was dusting the shelves at work a couple weeks ago, and I found some interesting things: items that were outdated by a day or so, a couple weeks...and even a few things dating back to July and May. Ugh. It was mostly noodles and canned goods, but still. And the scary thing is, we had done a MAJOR dusting project back in July, so there was no reason for me to find most of the stuff I did.

I had a customer bring in a return last night - without a recpt. . . but still had our tag on it.
Price showed on screen from scan a dollar more than price tag. Luckily I have the power to adjust prices in these situations without calling up a manger. Which means customer didn't catch on either and didn't get to become an SC that they were not getting more than they deserved. Manager was pleased to learn that I was paying enough attention that I caught the numbers not matching.

But seriously - who returns an under $5 item enough years later that the price is at least a dollar off? Let alone points out that they used to work in the store.

There is a deli near my house that makes fantastic sandwiches. It is family owned and awesome. The one flaw? I have found products for sale that are out of date by OVER A YEAR.

I found a half gallon of milk in a grocery store one time that was nice and chunky and a couple of months out of date. Kind of green also. Spew.

I think with us, it's because sometimes we swap goods with our sister store- they aren't as busy as us, so they often get quite short-dated stock, and we're more likely to sell it, but obviously, we don't sell it all. And, if it's brought in after the date to check that particular shelf (we check each shelf on a particular date), then we aren't going to know that instead of 6 packets with a sell-by of jun 08, we've got six packets with a sell-by of end of november 07. Meaning, they don't all sell, so when we get round to checking that shelf next month, there are a few out-of-date products hiding, because barely anyone bloody rotates stock.
