The other night a group of us were out eating, drinking, etc. Tab comes, I decide to take cash from everyone and put it on my card. Tab is roughly $100, so I leave a $40 tip. Add the bill up, to $240, sign and leave.

seeing the problem? I guess I had had one too many at that point.

I left this server a $140 tip.

Now, the owner of this particular place is notorious for treating his servers like crap, so I decided not to argue the point (later when I discovered my error) that I had actually written 40 in the tip section and had just added wrong.

I can afford to pay it (fortunately, I'm lucky enough to be well paid at my current job), so I guess I'll just consider it a holiday spirit mishap.

However, none of my friends let me add up the bill anymore.

If you wrote $40 on the tip line and just added wrong, you'd think they wouldn't legally be able to charge your card $240. I don't know, though.

I'd be happy to be that waitress if they did put the $140 tip through! Actually, I would have probably tried to contact you to give it back.

My bf's a server, and he said that his restaurant uses the tip line, not the total line (mostly because, well, people can't add), but I don't know what the general policy is.

Eh, it's my own stupidity, and I'm not gonna argue a tip back from someone because I fail basic arithmetic.

I just hope the shitty management doesn't say "Well it only says $40 in the tip line, so that's what you get, but since she wrote $240 in the total line, that's what we'll charge. Management/the company/the boss will keep the extra bill."

As for paying/tipping mishaps, last night I ordered a $14.99 pizza with cup of marinara and 2-liter of root beer. Since the weather was (and is) awful to drive in, I left the remainder of a $20 (meaning $5.01) as a tip. However, since I'm short on cash I used my card and then forgot to sign after adding up the total.

I used to work room service in a hotel and 18% gratuity was automatically added onto the bill. Occasionally someone would throw in an extra buck or two (loved those ppl), but people would also write in tips that were similar to what was already the gratuity. We would have to call the room and confirm if they meant to double tip, since not everyone read the receipt and realized tip was included already. Some people got pretty huffy, but others were sweet as can be. I was also amused by the people who thought midwesterners were the nicest people around, because they had never had such kind service. I live in northeastern US now, and I have to say people are just people wherever you go. Always made me feel nice, though.
