  • Messing up payment and pissing off supervisor

I made a big mistake at work today. About 15 minutes left in my shift, a customer pays with a debit card and says she wants $40 on it. I take that to mean she wants $40 cash back instead of just $40 on it. She does not correct me when I tell her the total for her records and only says something after it has gone through. She then proceeds to tell me that she wanted to pay for the rest with a check. This is an odd situation because the debit card and check belong to two different banks. I didn't think they were for another person because most customers doing that let us know so the two order can be bagged separately, but paid for together.

I call the bitch queen supervisor up to help me out, ideally by making a return on the debit card and ring up the total amount and doing what the customer wanted. My solution is giving the bitch supervisor too much intelligence. She claims not to know how to do a return on a debit/credit, which I find hard to believe since that is part of their training. More than likely she said that so she didn't have to do any extra work. The customer said that she would take it up with her bank, which I highly doubt she will do because I bank with the same one and chargebacks are a pain in the butt to do and take forever - but that's a whole different area. She leaves with her groceries. Bitch supervisor then goes back to her lunch and I know she's pissed. She takes her precious time picking up my register when my shift is over and doesn't say anything to me. I'm just worried that she'll report me to the head manager and I'll get reprimanded over this incident.

I told my parents and they said that I did the right thing in admitting I made a mistake and calling for help. They also thought the supervisor made a mistake in not trying to come to an agreeable resolution with the customer, something my father knows a bit about because of his job as a mid level corporate manager who over 25 years has had to deal with covering other people's inadequate work skills with clients. They said not to worry and hopefully everything will be okay. I hope they are right.

If she reports you then she has to explain why she couldn't do a credit return.

She shouldn't be mad at all. I would never get mad at someone for making a mistake (I might get a bit miffed if they had made the same mistake over and over again consistently) and anyway, she should have fixed it. That is why she is a supervisor. It usually is pretty simple to do a return on a debit card, just void it and start over.

Thank you all so much for your answers. Today was my day off and I stopped in on my way to run errands to get some pop and she was civil to me in her own odd fashion. The reasoning that if she reports me for messing up means her own ass is on the line for not doing the credit return makes sense. I know damn well that she was trained how to do that at one time - I have seen another supervisor do the same thing. She may be dumb, but she is bright enough to know not to put her ass on the line and risking a more serious reprimand.

usually when theres a payment via debit card, the return is even easier. the refund is in cash. i dont see why this became such a big issue.
