  • Fire...Run...Towards?

This is more of a reckless oops that something simple as making a mistake.

Yesterday I was walking past a former workplace of mine when I noticed something odd...there was smoke pouring out of the building. Since I used to work there and I was friends with all of them I headed over to where the assembly area for if a fire broke out. I join them, say hello and get the basics of what happened. Looking round I notice something so I go "Err, where's Kate?"

Nobody had seen her since the alarm went off, so immediately I turn into my Leadership mode (I don't choose to be a leader type person but if there is one needed then I'll step up) So I tell everyone to stay where they are no matter what and run inside...yep, that's right, I run into a burning building (Hence why it's an oops, but if you're read any of my previous posts, you'll know that I'll help someone who needs it, no matter what.

I stumble through the thick smoke, after a couple of minutes eventualy finding her, out cold, on the floor (this probably saved her life since smoke does rise) I pick her up and head back outside (I have a remarkable pathfinding skill no matter how bad the vision is)

Turns out she was in the stock room on her own, the alarm going off frightened her causing her to slip and knock herself out cold.

I promptly got a telling off (albeit in a slightly Well done kind of way) from the head Fireman who turned up. And then all of my former workmates offered to chip in for cleaning my clothes to get the smell of the smoke out.

I stopped in and checked on her this morning (they kept her overnight at the hospital just to look out for her) and she's fine, albeit with a cough and sore throat.

Whether you should have done it or not safety wise, that was an amazing thing of you do to.

Wow! You ran into a burning building and saved someone's life. That is pretty amazing. What did you say to the news crews or the local papers? There had to have been some press, there always is. Did they get a picture for the article?

Hey you should post a link to the article! We really should shout our achievements from rooftops a little more. Help fight the bad press we get from so many sucky customers.

There were no News crews, at least, if they even did turn up, it was long after I left. It's something of a small town in England so it isn't like there are news vultures lurking around every corner, but I'll have a look in a couple of days and see if anything turns up (I'm not much of a paper person)

Because it was Crazy? And if anything had happened to me it could have endangered the firemen havnig to look for two people instead of one (Then again it is their jobs I suppose) But if it happened all over again I'd do the same thing.

Well then the world should have more crazy like that in it. You would be amazed how most people wouldnt get involved. Or worse yet when they do the situation escalates. Had one customer need medical attention in our store. While we tryed to keep things clear most people went along on their business and stayed out of the way. We had one lady that refused all she wanted to do was see who it was and be nosy. When she finaly left she fought with the emt's for blocking her car in holding them up until the cops threatend to arrest her if she didnt stop. Yeah it was crazy but when push came to shove you showed what you were made of. That can never be an oops

Just glad you did, though. Nice one.

Sometimes the stupid thing is the right thing.

The key is being smart enough to be stupid and right, rather than smart and wrong. :P

The fact that you didn't even think "Oh, fire bad, I should stay out here", and just charged right in, is just amazing. Bravo.

I've exposed myself to fire (Cmapfires and bonfires) so much that I hold no fear of it, for good or Ill.

Infact I don't hold any fear for, well, anything, even death (Well, apart from spiders that is)

I have often heard it said that the difference between a hero and a fool is success, and I think this serves as an excellent example:

If an untrained, unequipped person runs into a burning building to find someone and gets themselves killed, they were a fool.
But if an untrained, unequipped person runs into a burning building, finds the person they were looking for, and carries them to safety, that person is a hero.

And if it makes you feel any better as you look back on the risks you took, remember that almost every hero's "heroic act" was, in retrospect, a foolish thing to do.
