Recently, my home printer stopped working. I call my brother to see if he can help me, since he's good with computers.
First words out of his mouth "Is it plugged in?"

It seems the cats knocked the plug out of the wall. You think I would have checked that myself. oops!

At least I didn't call tech support. That would have been really embarrassing.

I did that with my monitor once...I know TS had a good time laughing over me. It wasn't completely plugged in but looked plugged in when I looked at it...should have touched it too eh?

I actually DID call tech support for something that stupid. At work, our new POS register just went batty from time to time, so when I noticed the screen was completely black, I just called our tech support without checking the obvious. We had just been through weeks of agony with a crappy old monitor that died suddenly, and the one they brought in to replace it died also, so when I saw this I was ready to freak out. Well nothing was wrong with the monitor, I had just accidentally hit the power button with my elbow and turned it off.

Something like that happened to me at the gas station a while ago, after a long stressful day at work (in retail, who woulda guessed).

I'm trying to pump my gas, and the pump won't work and I'm about ready to explode. I run inside and start wailing 'The pump won't work! This is ridiculous! Can I prepay or something? Will that work? Gaaaawwwwdddd!"

The guy looks at me, probably trying to stifle a laugh, or the urge to kill me. And says "Uh, you have to pick what kind of gas you want first."



I didn't hit the button for regular, which is why the pump wasn't working. So I apologized and went out and pumped my gas, lol.

At the Chemists we installed a new EPOS that included a touch screen till now being vertically privilliged I tilted the screen back, and it died.

Nothing.

Dead.

Completely black.

Apparently the installation crew had tied the cable down so tight that if you adjusted the monitor to perhaps cut the glare, the power cable popped out.

I have called repair guys to my store to fix something that turned out to be unplugged. Now, when they show up, they ask "Is it plugged in?" and laugh at me. Luckily, we have a pretty good relationship, so I just tell 'em to screw off.

M'kay, here's one to top. I lost my monitor, no worky. Knew it had to be the cable. Tried to open the connector to check for broken wires, it was a molded cable. Tried to _Cut away the molding to get to the wires to find the broken one_.

FYI, a molded cable head is very unlikely to break a wire, since they wire it, put in a strain relief loop, and then seal the thing completely with plastic goop.

So I then cut off the connector and tried to figure out the wiring to make a new one. On a very expensive (at the time) Gateway monitor.

I did manage to get it working again, sort of, on a friends machine. Took it back to mine, still no worky?

Yeah, a re-seat on the video card and it was fine.

To this day, I have to avoid mentioning monitors to three people for fear of having to hear the tale again.

Cut myself too, darn it.....grumble grumble, no sympathy....
