  • I Can't Believe I Did This

On Friday our vacuum cleaner died. So we decided to buy another one on Saturday. We also had been needing to replace our gas grill so we made the decision to combine the trip and get both.

I planned it very carefully. First I logged in the Consumer Report web site and checked the ratings and prices for various brands. I selected what we wanted. Checked online prices. Found some alternates. Etc.

Next I found the stores that carried those models and carefully plotted our our trip to save gas. We stopped at the bank to get enough cash to pay for everything. I needed to go to Salem, NH to get some candle refills and books, so we went to the KMart and the Sears there to find the vacuum.

KMart did not have the vacuum, but they did have some other things we needed, which we picked up. We went to the regular book store for a couple of Pratchetts I wanted, then the Christian book store for the candle refills. Darn it. They were out, but would call me when they came in.

Off to Sears to try and buy the vacuum. Mr. Dips and I both liked it (he does at least as much vacuuming as I do, so he needed to try it too ). So we bought it and some extra bags. Declined the protection plan (sorry about that Sears guys, but we use a local repair shop and are more than happy to give them our business if we ever need something fixed).

Great. Next to Nashua to get the grill at Lowes. That took some time. They didn't have the model we wanted, so we had to choose from some alternates, but (BONUS!) they were on sale for 20% off. The one we selected was in stock according to the sales person, but not at the location it was supposed to be at. He was very apologetic that he'd have to hunt it down and bring it out, but we let him know we were OK with waiting. We used the time to pick out a grill cover and a new grill brush.

About 10 minutes later the grill came out. We transferred it to a cart, thanked the associate for his help and went through the check out with our loot.

We felt pretty good as we went out to the parking lot to load it into...

    Our Honda Civic four door...

Which already had a vacuum cleaner in it...

Yeah. We should have brough the hatchback. D'oh!

So Mr. Dips and I had a very heated discussion where I tried to convince him to make it fit and he insisted there was No. Farking. Way.

Of course he was right. Which made me irritable. I certainly didn't want to wait around for an hour while he went home and got the other car. The amused expressions of passerby weren't helping either.

Then I remembered something I'd read on here. We could take it out of the box!

So we did. We unpacked the whole thing and crammed bits of it into every spot we could find. It fit.

Of course we took all the packing materials with us instead of leaving them in the parking lot. After all, I might be an idiot, but I'm not an SC.

    Sends *hugs*.

Not your fault. Too much going on in life .

    Funny as heck, though.

    Seriously - that's too funny!

And you certainly didn't "suck" as a customer.
No... Just No! And I mean it this time!

In the future, if you do something like that again, ask the loaders at lowes if they would be willing to take the box and packing materials. Most of the time they don't mind running it back to the dumpster if you ask nicely.

Luckily, there was no loader involved. That would have compounded the embarassment.

I'm hoping this becomes a lesson burned and I never do something like that again.

We managed to put the grill together without screwing up too much. It's shiny!

Reminds me of when my husband and I decided to buy the new TV. He measured the car, and when we got the store, measured the TV, and decided we had plenty of room.

We forgot it came in a box!

The loaders were really nice about it, they held it inside while we called the in-laws to ask them to bring the minivan (we didn't have my hatchback then). Now, of course, we bring the hatchback for anything larger than normal--lesson learned!

When we bought our 42" LCD, I measured the trunk, and then had them bring the box out so I could measure that. It just barely fit with the seats folded down.

Not like when I bought a new grill. I didn't think it looked that big, even in the box. But when I brought the box out, there was no way to make it fit. So like the OP, I had to take the pieces out of the box and put it in that way.

This is why I love my Matrix. That thing can swallow a truly ridiculous amount of cargo. Not that I *buy* big stuff very often, but I love being able to pop my bike in without taking the wheels off. (I have a vintage steel touring bike; the wheels don't have quick releases).

I've moved a dining room set (table, 6 chairs, and sideboard) in a 1977 Chevette. No, I have no idea how

When I finally get around to owning a car, it'll more than likely be a big Volvo estate. I don't need to drive everywhere I go, so the car is to deal with the exceptional cases when I need to move a lot of stuff.

We broke them down and shoved them where they fit. The main thing was the fire box, which fit into the back seat once we took it out of the box. The other parts went on the floor and whatever space in the trunk wasn't taken by the vacuum cleaner.

The hardest thing to fit was the box itself. We flattened it and tried to slide it behind the front seat, but then we couldn't shut the doors because it protruded out both sides...

I honestly don't remember exactly how we made it fit, but we did!

When I finally convinced my dad to upgrade the TV in the den to a nice 42" LCD along with a surround sound system etc, we are decided on what car to take. He said Caddy sedan I said SUV. He won. Well we got the DVD player and surround sound stuff home i the Caddy then back to the store with the SUV for the TV.
