  • I Dropped the balls...of boudin

Boudin pronounced "Boo-dan" for those not familiar with it. Among the many things the deli serves cooked fried or otherwise we serve what is called Boudin balls or bites wich are about medium to large meatball sized battered orbs of boudin which are mildly spicy but rather good. Served on a daily basis due to their popularity.

ANYWHO back to the story at hand.
Recently was hired to work in the deli of a local grocery store in the deli...cooking people's food (heh heh)
just pulled the boudin balls as they are called out of the fryer and putting them in the bowl for carrying food from the kitchen to the serving area in the front part of the deli. before i could even reach the door my grip slipped from grease covered gloves and i dropped the bowl dumping all but five of them ...felt horrible since people were waiting on them but they only take five minutes to cook. thankfully there were more in stock to cook.

How embarrassing! Sounds like it was all handled properly though and people were understanding at least.

Reminded me of when I waited tables at a Big Boy eons ago. Slow night so wait staff was whittled down to myself and a waiter and one cook. Not one of us rememberd that there was a 50's concert going on at the fair grounds less than a mile away. Can you say SLAMMED? That night will live with me forever. They all wanted ice cream malts, shakes, splits etc etc. We just kept on keeping on, slinging ice cream and cutting pies and running our tails off.

I had just made a tray of shakes for a table of 4 so I have 4 glasses and 4 metal cannisters with the balance of their shakes in them for delivery. I hightail it from around the work area and slip on spilled ice cream (place was looking like a war zone at that point) and the entire tray goes down with a HUGE crash. Nothing to do but keep on going out to the table and look at them with big eyes and say...did ya'll hear that??? They nodded and said, yes we did...to which I replied...well, that was your shakes, give me 10 more minutes? Luckily they laughed and even tipped me well.
