So as many of you know I work in a hotel. The way the card machine works is that you Press Enter and Swipe the FDA (Authorization) card, before you can go through the process of making a room key.
A guest checked in and his card wasn't working so I went to make him a new one. Instead of swiping the keycard I'd just taken out of the drawer, I swiped the FDA. So now not only had I erased the card, but there was no way to make the guest a new one.
He was nice enough to allow me to just unlock the door for him, without giving him his own key. However, I was in deep trouble if i didn't find the spare FDA card. After about 15 minutes of searching, I did not find one anywhere where such a key would be. Freaking out I called Adorable Manager, forgetting she was on vacation and thus not available. So I called my one of my CWs, who had been working here longer than I.I felt really guilty as it was 3am and she has a baby. She didn't answer her phone either.
So now I was feeling guilty and panicked. What if another guest showed up? What if there was no way to make a new FDA?!
In desperation I called one of my CW who has only been working here since June. She answers, and while I feel like a jerk for waking her, I tell her what happened. She calmly, and tiredly, explains to me that there is an instruction book in the filing cabinet that explains how to make a new FDA.
It was a piece of cake to reformat the card, in the end. Still, I can't believe I was stupid enough to deprogram it in the first place.
