BG: I work in a homeless shelter, and we get many types of people. This is the (ongoing) story of one of them.
Man comes into the shelter, he appears to be in his late 50's/early 60's, and is homeless and wants to stay at our 5 Star facility (it actually is very nice). He gives front desk a name and they call me to come see him and do a possible intake. He comes back to my office and gives me a different name, and when I ask him about it, says he has recently changed his name to Pepe LePew. He then hands me a Social Security application in that name and tells me it's legal.
As I looked at him in disbelief, he started his story of how he was supposed to get disability and that they wouldn't give it to him unless he had someone to sign for it, and he didn't need someone to take care of his money. He then showed me a deposit slip for a local bank with 80 billion dollars written on it to prove he could handle his own money, and proceeded to show me the 80 billion dollars he carried around with him because no bank could take that large of a deposit.
It was a one dollar bill with 80 billion written on it. Signed Pepe LePew. He told me that he could prove he could handle his own money because he was a doctor, and had written a letter to Social Security and just needed to bring it to their office.
The letter stated: Dear Social Security. This is to state that Pepe LePew is of sound mind and body and can handle his own money so please give it to him. Signed, Dr. Pepe LePew.
The letter had a dollar bill attached, which had been folded to show the great seal of the United States and then taped onto the letter. He had then written "Great Seal of Great Britain" and drawn an arrow to the seal.
At this point, I asked him what his disability was. His answer? He was blind.
I had to call the local sheriff to determine his identity, as he had told us multiple identities at this point, and the dispatcher started to laugh when I explained who he claimed he was . After saying she would dispatch a unit, I took Mr. LePew into the front office to wait.
10 sheriff's cars showed up. I had cops, local sheriffs, state sheriffs, plain clothes police officers, bicycle officers, etc going through my office. We ended up standing outside discussing his case, and at one point they asked me what his disability was.
I told them what he had told me, and one sheriff looked at me and said "So he's Mr. Magoo too?" which had all of us rolling around laughing.
Pepe was allowed to stay one night, didn't manage that (he left in the middle of the night), and now has come back several times to try again, each time with a different story. I will update with the stories as I can.
