  • Oh so happy!

It's official. Starting tomorrow, the company I work for is going to be Mail in Rebates free!

No more hassles of MIR hunts, no more explaining to customers the concept of a MIR, no more headaches from having to explain why a company is being anal about giving them out, and finally...

No more getting blamed for another company's MIR screwup!

If only every company would do that. I hate MIR. I hated dealing with MIR. I usually don't buy a product that has a MIR. I will buy something else.

I hope you go into work extra happy tomorrow! I know I would be.

I hate MIR's. They are truly a PITA.

The whole concept of mail in rebates bugs me. If you want to offer a discount, just offer a discount!

*yes, I know they are banking on the fact the a certain percentage of people will never get around to mailing in the form and they get to keep the full purchase amount...

No argument there. I don't even bother with anything under $10. It just doesn't seem worth the hassle, especially when you factor in the postage. I saw some product that offered a one dollar rebate, but somehow filling out a shitload of forms and paying 39 cents to get a dollar back seemed like a waste of time.

You've hit the nail on the head. If they actually discounted the price, they'd have to give it to everyone. But some people are going to forget, decide it's too much trouble, or do it wrong.

Hell, you can do everything right, and they could still screw you out of your rebate. Staples tried to pull that crap on me once, claiming that I didn't send them the UPC symbol when I actually did. All I had to do was send that to them, and they'd process my rebate, but that's kind of hard to do, when you no longer have it, because you've already sent it.

I sent them a not-so-nice letter thru PFB, not actually expecting anything to come of it, but surprisingly, they did a total 180 and sent me an email promising that I'd get the rebate after all, which did arrive a few days later.

There are still two rebates from last fall that I never got. The one might have been my fault, as I sent it at the last minute, but the other, I don't know what the deal is. And of course, I didn't hold on to the information, so I don't even know who to yell at.

As I understand it, a rebate is what a manufacturer uses when it wants to give a discount. It's not the choice of the retailer, either at store or corporate level. For example, Logitech offers a rebate on a set of computer speakers, and Staples and Best Buy and everyone else who sells the speakers advertises the deal and makes the rebate forms available to customers.
