  • sick of it

I'm tired of dealing with customers. Is there any job you guys can think of that I might be able to have where I wouldn't have to deal with customers? I've only worked cashier jobs before.

I told a kid to stop rolling around in some heelie shoes tonight and he told his mother I cussed him out and she called the store furious.

I'm sick and tired of them lying about me like that. It's happened a couple of other times too.

I also hate it that when I'm tired or sick or don't feel like smiling, that people go and complain that I have 'an attitude', like they think they're better than me because they're on the other side of the counter.

Please give me some advice for how to find a job where I don't have to deal with this BS anymore.

I can't really say much, as I haven't figured out how to do it myself, but you might want to try working in a different type of retail. I know, for example, that a pizza store gets you more respect than fast food, while video stores get you worlds more than either. If you want out of the grind, though, my best suggestion would be to try warehouse work. It's hard, but most places pay well, and you don't deal with end-use retail customers.

I agree. Warehouse or stocker work could work for you, or you could try going to a small shop where they won't be as many customers.

      Or reciptionist work.

If you REALLY hate people all together, look around for a data entry job. Requires you to be quick with a keyboard and accurate, but you get left alone, completely alone for your entire shift.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

Mailroom can be a good job. You still need to deal with people, but they are all internal 'customers', so they generally do not come equipped with their entitlement switch turned on.

Mailroom is also a great way to get access to other jobs within a company.

            Manufacturing cured me.

Although no longer dealing with customers, now I deal with coworkers of all different types of backrounds and personalities.......and since they are all women, it can get REALLY catty.

But would I rather work at the factory for the rest of my life than ever stand behind a cash register again? Hell yes.

I was getting to the point where I was becoming a sucky employee at my retail jobs. I was losing it. I could no longer stand to serve people. I could no longer stand to have lies told about me, to be yelled at for things that weren't my fault, and my brilliant acting skills weren't as effective as they were when I was 14. Over time, I had become a very bitter, angry person. I still hate people for the most part.

I will never, ever work retail again as long as I live. I don't care what I have to do to avoid working retail again, but NEVER again.

I used to love to receive shipment when I worked at the shoe store. What is the actual job title for mail room work? That doesn't sound too bad. What do you do in there exactly?

I looked for data entry before I went back to work as a cashier and apparently they didn't want me for that unless I already had experience in it. *sighs*

It's not people I have a problem with really. I usually get along well with co workers, at least to my face. It's the general public and the entitlement complex that comes with them that I'm starting to get tired of. They automatically think they're better than me and they think I'm their actual servant.

Just today at work there was a woman who thankfully didn't come to me this time, but I've had to deal with her in the past. She wanted to do price matches, and started screaming at a new cashier about how she wasn't a liar when he tried to look up the price matches in the fliers we keep at each register. Then she demanded he say "I'm sorry." She said "You say I'm sorry right now! Right now! I spend hundreds of dollars in this store and I'm not going to be treated like a liar!" The funny thing? She does try to get matches she's not supposed to have. I don't want to be in a position where I have to let someone talk to me that way or stand by and not say anything while I see one of my coworkers being talked to like they were 5 years old.

I hate it when customers try to talk about my 'attitude' like I'm in elementary school or something. Being tired or sick is not an 'attitude'. I have to come to work whether I feel tired or sick or not unless I'm REALLY sick.

Our mail room is run by the Adminstrative Services dept.

The actual titles are all something like "Administrative Services blah blah blah"... assistant, supervisor, clerk...

The people in the room, there's three or so, actually do stuff beyond just mail...

--Sort the mail into the slots, then take it around the building and drop it off at each dept, get the outbound mail ready for pickup
--Receive stuff from couriers, and arrange for pick of out going stuff by couriers
--A couple of them answer the phones a bit... we have an automated voice mail system, but there are always calls that need the 'operator' to direct them
                --Arrange service anniversary celebrations etc.
--Helps HR get new employees setup (security badge, map of the building, etc.)
--Make sure that coffee station supplies are in good order
--Basic stuff around the building, such as changing burned out light bulbs and similar minor repairs, arranging to have the fire extinquishers checked regularly, carpet cleaning done, snow removal in the winter, grass cutting in the summer
--Look after the photocopiers (make sure there is enough paper, arrange repair/maintenance)
--Deal with the vending machine guy
--Are the keepers of stuff that is locked up and needs to be signed out (e.g. projectors)
                --Arrange for office moves
--Look after getting busted furniture fixed/replaced

In some places Admin Services also arranges flights and travel etc. for people travelling on business.

There's always some sort of office work. Big problem with that is all the sucky customers you deal with now may end up being your coworkers, and it won't make them suck less.

Office work is the way forward. Yeah you may get sucky co-workers but you don't have to serve them.

You could try the job I have now. A mall security guard. You only have to deal with a handfull of people a day asking where a certain store, washroom or food court is. Otherwise they just leave you be to wander the mall. Just make sure you have good comfortable shoes.

If you're really serious about finding a new type of job, but you lack experience, you might consider signing up with a selection of temp agencies. If you're really lucky, you'll get a job you don't hate where they buy out your contract from the agency.

Andara's suggestion is a good one. Temp agencies will test you for your typing speed and computer skills - and if you pass those, they'll put you up for office jobs even without experience. If you don't like temp work (I know I didn't) its no big deal - you only have to do it for a few months to get those skills on your resume. And no one really questions why you left a temp agency after only a few months.

If you can afford it in any way, bring your resume to a professional to look over and polish up for you. There may be a bunch of stuff you've done in your retail jobs that qualifies you for office work that you may not have thought of. A human resources specialist will know the right questions to ask you, and the right way to word things on your resume.

Regarding the resume: When my boyfriend did his testing at the agency that he got his current job from (two months and counting), the person who worked with him gave him a lot of pointers on how to make his resume look better. Funny thing is that based purely on the resume, they weren't that interested in placing him. That is, until they had him do the testing and found out that he can type fairly quickly and accurately.
