Customers wanting grocery store to break a large bill early in the morning

It's a big problem in my store. When the drawers get switched and someone has a large bill I can just get change from the manager. I have no problem making them wait. Telling me you have something smaller and I really have no problem making you wait. Fine if you needed the bill broken but you can at least ask. I'm pretty sure my store is the only one that will do it since it's mostly fast food places and gas stations local to our location.

One time I had a guy bitch about the small bills I gave him and when I said that's all I had he backtracked. Hey, he should just be glad he didn't have to wait.

Though one time I had a cashier in a grocery store bitch at me because I paid for something with a $20. My purchase was about $5. It was after 10 in the morning on a weekend. I didn't think it was such a big deal. But what do I know.

I don't have anyone to call to get more change. All I have access to is in my drawer; anything in the safe has already been accounted for and must remain there until it is collected by authorised persons. My opening float is significantly more than the largest bill we have in circulation over here, but if I change a couple in a row then everyone else is getting fractional coins (50ps, 20ps, etc.) as change for the rest of the day. There's no excuse, because ATMs here don't give those notes out - the custie's have specifically requested them, so they've made a rod for their own backs & it's Not My Problem™

I'm positive that they do...and the customers ASK for big bills. I've stood behind plenty of "high rollers" at my bank who get their paychecks cashed just so they can flash a few hundreds around wherever they go.

Whenever I see someone like that I assume he makes minimum wage. These people don't realize it doesn't make them look wealthy because we all know the truly wealthy keep their money in banks and special accounts where it can collect interest. They use credit cards for convenience because they have no problem paying the bills. They have no need to carry wads of cash. Probably all the big bills on that "high roller" are the sum of his month's pay, not what he has to spend just today.

For some strange reason that member is convinced that I am on the autistic spectrum.

Where are you getting 'power struggle'? There is no 'fault' here.

And if the point is to get change *for a big bill* , why would you use a debit card?

And I would also have assumed that a large grocery store would be able to do this, easily. I figured, if my store could do it, why not others? But wait! After reading everyone's replies, I can see I didn't have a full understanding of how little cash is normally kept in grocery store registers. Hey, I learn stuff about other workplaces on this site all the time. It sounds like that person just really wants to be right.
