It's only temporary, but at this point, every little bit helps.
I'd been told that even though I still have one job, I might qualify for unemployment insurance benefits. So I applied.
Initially they said I didn't have enough hours. Current Employer sent a Record of Employment that stopped in February, for some reason. I wrote back to ask them to send a new one that extended into mid-May (the time at which I lost the office job). They did.
I went back to the government office today and talked to somebody about why my request had been denied. One of the things she asked me was whether I'd sent in a report yet (you have to send these things in weekly). I said no. She urged me to do so. "What's the point, if I'm not getting unemployment?" I wasn't being sucky or snarly -- if your claim has been denied the system won't let you send in a report (I had tried once, earlier this week).
She told me that the new information had just appeared in the system in the past 24 hours (which is odd, because I saw it there several days ago ... but no doubt she can see sections of the system that I can't).
"Let's try anyway," she said.
And lo and behold: I can send in my reports because they have reversed their original decision and I am going to get unemployment insurance after all. It's only for 17 weeks, but there is a possible job pending sometime in the (hopefully early) fall, and meanwhile this is going to make a HUGE difference in my situation here.
I treated myself to lunch out -- with a celebratory glass of wine -- in honour of the occasion.
First payment should show up in my bank account within 48 hours.
