Being nice to cashiers

I'm afraid I mostly stick with basic politeness. Say hello, say thank you at the end, answer questions. They are human, but so am I and I don't really feel comfortable talking to strangers most days. The positions you copied are extremes. Many of us don't live at the extremes.

And this is the way most cashiers would prefer you to act -- as a cashier I don't want to make friends with you, I have 20 other people behind you wanting to buy gas, I don't have time for that. But I would like some basic courtesy. While yes, if it wasn't for customers I wouldn't have a job, but on the other hand, until we get robot cashiers, without me you wouldn't be able to buy your cigarettes and gas.

Also when I get sick of you and treat you exactly the way you treat me, you needn't call to complain to my boss, he's probably in the back room rolling his eyes at you.
