  • Went from flex time to no flex time

I work in a crappy cubicle in a crappy office. The one bright spot in my day was that I could come into work a little early or a little late... it didn't matter as long as I got my job done. Cool.

Well all that has changed. With a new boss comes new rules. Apparently now we must publish our work hours and stick to them. We are allowed to come in earlier than our posted hours... or stay later... but we cannot come in later... or leave earlier... So even if we come in early... we can leave early... but we can stay late!

This was the last of many straws... I'm giving notice on Monday...

That sucks. My husband has flex time and he loves it. Sometimes he needs to be there when no one else is working, if he needs to roll out an update or patch(he's an IT guy) it is so much easier when most of the machines are not in use.

Why do some new bosses feel the need to mark their territory like dogs, with pointless rule changes and new rules?

When I worked in an Elementary School, we got a horrible new principal who did that, she changed things just because she could, even though it caused confusion and uproar. It was a sign of things to come, she was a truly terrible administrator. We lost many good people due to her incompetence and Napoleon complex.
One of her rules was to arbitrarily switch all the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers. These people had to go out and get everything new because they were teaching a different grade. It was completely against their will and only done to show her power. She did many other ridiculous things as well. I still hate her, and it has been quite a few years since I left.

My work doesn't have flex time.

        At least, not officially.

If you need to change things around a bit to fit around something else, and it's within normal office hours (we have people start as early as 7am and leave as late as 5pm guaranteed) it can usually be arranged. Depending on the office situation, you can sometimes stay later. We "officially" close at 5pm, but I've actually worked until after 7pm (the boss needed something and I had no other plans), and the CFO (who also makes sure the computers work right) has been known to work until the next morning.

I work a regular schedule, 8-4:30; some people in my office work 7-3:30...whatever we want, but we have to give our schedule to HR, and we also have to punch in and out (which is kinda dumb if you ask me...we also have to give a timesheet to my boss which is even dumber, since we punch in and out and he can pull that up any time he wants). But if we need to come in late or leave early we can take personal time or just make it up later in the week.

When I worked in Philly they had flex time that got you an extra day off every pay period (2 weeks). You worked about 45 minutes extra each day and you could take off either the first or second Monday or Friday of the pay period. It was really nice. Funny thing there was we had to fudge our timesheets because we actually ended up working 41 hours one week (we had a 36 1/4 hour work week) and we couldn't put more than 40 hours down, but they had to add up to 72.5 at the end of the two weeks...
